hey guys, i went to start my EL this arvo, and noticed it cranked over rather slowly and once it was running the volt gauge wouldnt show over 10-10.5. didnt think much of it, till i got to the bank and switched the car off, went to start it again, and nothing.....

i ended up push starting it by myself (b**ch of a job uphill  )... went and put another battery in, same thing, cranked slowly and drained the battery.

the volt gauge thing had been going on for a while, it used to stay on 10 on cold starts till i revved it to 2000rpm, then it would flick up to 14.8 and the dash lights would go to their normal brightness.

can anyone shed some light on whats going on ? the battery is under 12 months old...

Probably not enough current.

Either way get your Alternator checked out. Also check the earth strap on the alternator. Might need a bit of cleaning to give it better contact.

mm yeah il get it checked tomorrow... i should also add, that i stopped and started it a few times while not moving, running it for a minute or so at a time, and each time it cranked slower and slower, as if the alternator wasnt charging it at all.

There might be a short somewhere as well that could cause you to lose battery juice. If the alternator isn't working properly or not at all, it wouldn't take long for the car battery to go flat when you're attempting to start it without charging. It does take a fair bit of power from the battery to crank the engine over.

It would nearly have to be something to do with the alternator. Try starting your car turn your lights on and then disconnect the batt terminal see if your lights stay on.

I just had this exact same problem.... battery was full.. drove car for a bit.. battery dead and no charging..

In my case was the earth straps.. one from negative terminal to the body near the radiator expansion tank and the other was the engine to body strap... I just made and installed a newbie for that one. problem went away.. I notice now that my amp guage shows at least 3mm higher than it ever did without the new straps.

worth checking...
