I have a EB XR6 motor in my daily driven EB on gas. Now i always go out about 15mins before i leave for work and start it up, so it warms up before my short trip to work.

Now when i start it up dead cold theres a strange harmonic rumble i guess you could call it. it goes like "vvvvvvvvv" for like a second, then stops, then does it again, then stops etc etc. but when i come out to drive to work it's warmed up and the noise it gone.

Now i run 15w50 Nulon oil and a genuine filter, both always get changed every 5000kms.
The motor has done about 230,000kms. Does get driven mildly hard, hence why i always warm it up.
Harmonic balancer is all good. is about 18months old. Doesn't wobble.
Motor doesn't lack power. Goes alright. The only lag it has is the damn 320,000kms auto thats behind it. Will get around to changing that one day lol

what do you guys think?

I would start the car with all the front v belts removed or serpentine belt(don't know what engine setup your running) to see if it does it. If it doesn't make the noise with all the drive belts removed, then it's a process of elimination.

Also check your pwr str pump and fluid level--they can make some wierd noises...

I had a carolla in a workshop once that very similar, It had taken a hit to the sump and closed up the gap to the oil pickup, While the oil was cold it made a noise as it tried to suck the sump into the oil pick up. when it warmed up the oil thinned and the noise stopped.

Fair point. i'll give it a crack this weekend. Need a new A/C Idler and Belt anyway. Squeals when A/C on, on a hot day at idle

tickford_6
sump has been pushed up a tiny bit. Maybe 1cm in the middle. where's the oil pickup on these motors. I've had the sump off before but cannot remember.

I donno if I heard it like others or you do,
is it the intermittent noise, almost like a church bell, you can't type sounds!!! Dammitt, lol.

I can hear it start a little louder then it fades out for a few seconds then "DRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrr" again.

Maybe the AC idlers a bit worn and although it only squeals under load it causes this noise while cold?

Is it the noise at these points that you mean? 37-38 secods, 40-41 sec, that's where I can hear it at it's "start point" also it is when the noise is getting less constant.
Hope that makes sense...lol.

It's interesting though, and your phone has a wicked mike!! Mine woulda just recorded a muffled drone..

put your finger tips on the sump while the noise is there, you'll feel it if thats what it is.

Def' sounds like the thin metal of the sump vibrating away under suction from oil pump... Oil pickup is nearer front of engine - I'd say just about under the gap between cylinder 2 and 3 from memory... Lick mr Ticky_6 wrote, you may just be able to feel the vibration through your fingers.

If oil is thick when cool (it is) then the actual pickup for the oil could be pulled downwards, the sump could be pulled upwards and the two connect quite nicely. Thus a harmonic noise that fades in and out due to all the bouncing pressures of all the different stressed parts.

Quite interesting nonetheless. Nothing at all like other sumps which have been pushed up to the extent they talk loudly to the crank........... Or my personal annoyance - Bent sandwich plate hitting on flywheel when engine gets hot... It hits and sqweels for a few minutes, then gets too hot and flips like a thermostat the other way..... Long flat head screwdriver now permanent fixture in toolkit.

Good work on recording the noise. I guess if it was louder at top of motor you would have recorded by lifting the bonnet. The fact you went straight under the car with the mic' suggests it is bottom end related?

fiend: from the top all you can hear is the ticking injectors.

Now I've read a little more here about this oil thing, even though it sounds totally trip, it makes sense.
Maybe give thinner oil a try?

I'm gonna give a 15W40 a try.

Might fix your lifter tick too, lol.

i'm running 15w50. bit thicker when warm to combat the drop in pressure

Tried anything to pull the sump down??? They can be a bit of a mission alright. Could drain all the oil and try welding something to it and pulling down. Or just put a self tapping screw or two in there...? Hell... I don't know of an easy way. Ask BENJ what he did about his old EL sump when it was too high.
