I took my car in to get an oil leak fixed yesterday. And the mechanic has informed me that they couldn't do it, as it's either a sump/pan gasket which would be an engine out job.
Or a timimg cover oil seal which would require the head to come off.

Is doing the sump from below, holding the engine in place from above, dropping the frame a safe way to do the sump gasket?

You can do it with the engine in-place, its just painful and time consuming. Also, you can change the timing cover gaskets without removing the head, if you drop the sump.

Dropping the k-frame would give you more room to work if you have the capacity to do this.

Thanks man.

Just had a couple of quotes, Hitek Perth, $1300 and up for a sump gasket change.

Ford, $500.

I think that just about answers that.

yep. No way would i pull the engine out to do a sump gasket. The K frame is held in by ALOT less and alot less chance for stuff to go wrong.
and head off to do a timing cover gasket/seal? those guys are on drugs

Yeah sorry, in all fairness, they did say they could go through the sump also. But it had to be engine out.
And their specialty is brake and clutch after all I suppose. Only so much they can do out of their field.
