I am looking into the possibility of an MP3 CD stacker to replace the orginal factory fitted 6 CD stacker mounted in the boot of my EL. I had a look at the sticker on the back of the original unit and found the following model number:

FCH-006A1X ( the first letter might have been an "S" because the sticker was damaged )
My question is; will a new MP3 CD unit work with my orginal head unit? If so, what brand will plug straight in?

I am not speaking from experiance but I doubt it will work. Mainly because the head unit would need the software to decode an MP3 track, and I dont think the EL headunit would have that technology inside it.

Id be looking at replacing the deck and the stacker, if you have the cash. Would probably be easier in the end :)

I think you have to anyway, replace the head unit and get a stacker that matches it.. That or get a stacker with an FM modulator. Actually, if you got an mp3 CD player you probably won't find the need for an mp3 cd stacker.. One CD can play about 10 hours of music anyway depending on the file size and/or bit rate.

afaik alpine are the only company that currently has an MP3 stacker, but you'll need the MP3 HU to go with it

I have no idea where the Alpine bit came from seeing that Ford always have used Pioneer for their stock systems. The stacker only says FMS Audio.

I thought Pioneer too but then someone recently said that they might have been rebadged Alpine units.

Another thought ocurrs to me. I haven't been paying much attention to car audio since my last major purchase in '96 and during that year I remember Kenwood had a HU called the "stealth" model or something like that. The HU would retract into the dashboard and a blank cover would come out and slide into place where the HU face used to be and make it look like there was no stereo there at all. Do they still make that style?

i know the EF/EL premium sound amps were alpine amps minus the alpine badges, and i've seen a EF XR6 with a alpine badged 6 stacker that had supposedly been there since it came out of the factory

Mine is the same as the Alpine unit in my Dad's E36 BMW 323i, and I've got the premo sound. But I know that the stacker doesn't change for the Mid, or premo sound system.

FMS was a company started by Ford Mitsubishi and Sanyo to mass produce audio gear for their cars. Sanyo now own it completly. The stackers in the EF/EL series were Alpine units slightly customized for FMS, but certain factory alpine stackers will plug straight in. The speakers are Pioneer and the HU were the FMS series of equipment.

Clear as mud? :D

theres a top of the line alpine one with a 1-1/3rd din face that slides out from the unit itself, and when it's turned off, it looks like a detatchable face HU minus the face...... about $1500+, and u need amps cos it doesnt have speaker level outputs IIRC

JVC do a range called "El Kameleon" that just show a blank black face.....

The only factory Ford stuff I have seen have been Kenwood, Alpine and Pioneer.
