dont forget you will need to purchase power/speaker wires too!

what car do you have?

not sure what you plan to run where, but sometimes in the rear you can get away with stock speakers if you have a sub.. depends if you want great sq.. but with 550 it probably want make a huge difference, perhaps look at a deck with some front splits, leave the back speakers and just get sub/amp..

though this might push you over you budget.. but its better to get good stuff now rather than have to upgrade.

Speaker wires generally come with the speakers, but youll need power wires and RCA's still. Not too expensive, i think i stole some long leads from behind our tv.... Works for me :D Sounds like an alright little system, but if you can see yourself wanting to upgrade later, it may be an idea to get a few more expensive items and then add to it when you can. Start off with a deck, improves SQ a HEAP. My old stock head unit for my falcon was unclear to the point you wondered whether listening was worth it.

Have a look it the for sale section if you want to save some $$ But it is a good idea to buy something decent so it will do the job well for years to come. My system is only small but still cost around $2,000 Comprises of a JVC mp3 HU, Coustic 4 & 2 ch amps, JL audio VR splits in front, JL audio TR splits in rear and a JL audio 10W3v2-D2 sub.

the car is a 94 ef falcon,

the speakers are kenwood (not sure what sort, but theyre stock),

are splits much better than 2way 6"?

i was goin to run the speakers off the hu and the sub off the amp.

what sort of deck would you rekomend. i wanted to spend around 200 on the hu.

thanks

2nd hand can be the best way to go sometimes... depends what you have to spend.. for example for 800 i got all my wires
pioneer deck
front mb quart splits
220w sony amp for splits
cadence z4000 amp for subs
2*12" mtx subs in a ported box
and a cheap ebay tv :)

if you got the time and patience id recommend an average deck, set of resonable front splits and an amp for them. that could use most of your 550.. run the rear stock speakers off the deck. then save a bit more, + what you have left if you need to then look into a single 12" and amp. that shouldnt cost to much more

my best advice woild be not to buy everything at once. buy it in bits and stages so every time you install something you can sit down and listen to it and make a decision on what you need next.

but if you bought it new all at once, the people at the shop (JB or strathfield, cheapest at the moment) im sure they would giv me 10%off or sometjhin and all the gear would be under warranty.

if i bought it off ebay what should i be careful of?

Ebay is generally pretty good...ive gotten a few subs off there in the past...but after ive payed my cash...and until i can actually see, feel and hear the item i was s**t myself..wasnt sure of quality or broken.. ebay sellers are usally trust worth but be carefull, get any items from a reputable ebayer...the more positve points(Stars) the better.

cheers

I've bought brand new speakers and and amp of Ebay.
Guy based in Paramatta.
He allows pickup, for no extra cost, gives a good price, and was easy to deal with.
His Ebay store is called "audiosecuritywarehouse".
I wouldn't buy from overseas personally, the risk of getting stung for customs, and the difficulty of a warranty claim put me off of it.

Strathfield has some good cheap deals happening from now till christmas maybe check them out.
plus they price match if you find it cheaper.
