A mates BMW has the flashing headlight syndrom after I put a sub in it for him. He wants to give a cap a go, I've got a JayCar Response Precision RU-6752 (http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID ... &SUBCATID=) sitting here. But I'm not sure on how to wire it.

I know I need to initially charge it using a resistor.

The cap has a positive and negitive side on the top. Does it just go inline of the power wires to the amplifier? i.e. so positive wire from battery, to positive side of cap, then to positive on amplifier. Negitive wire from neg terminal on the battery, to the neg side of the cap and then to the neg on the amplifier.

A cap is only a half assed way to fix it.

Upgrade the wires first.

Your wiring configuration is ok it's just that caps especially cheap ones are useless....

As already mentioned, the proper fix is to ensure there's adequate earth connections. The earth cable should be at least as big as the power wire (bigger won't hurt), and if you're earthing to the body, remember to upgrade the earth wire from the body to the battery, the stock one in EF/EL Falcons is far too small (12ga?).

But yeah, the diagram shows the right way to wire up the cap.

Of course, you wouldn't actually run a negative cable from the battery back to the amp the way you've drawn it.

Besides that - it's fine.

My positive cable goes:
battery - circuit breaker under bonnet - distrib block in boot.
distrib block in boot - capacitor.
distrib block in boot - amp.

Each component has it's own (short) earth connection.

And yeah connect the cap last, with a light bulb or resistor in line.
Best with a light bulb because when the light goes out you know the cap is charged and it's safe to directly connect it.

you need to inline the + but the neg goes from cap to body but not to the same spot as the amp..

yeah man heaps better what size amp he got just rember 1 farrett is 1000 watts rms...

It's something pretty pissy from what I remember. 300watts maybe, little green Fusion unit. So the cap should be way overkill.

Seems strange that an amp this small would need a cap.
Oh well bandaid is often done instead of fixing a fault.
At least he can show his mate the massive cap due to having such a monster audio system

I want to know what a "farrett" is???? Isn't that some kind of rodent?????
