Just get a low beam set of H1's.
HID's are not really any good as high beams, as they take a few seconds to increase to full intensity.

They'll be the best thing your mate would have ever spent on the XR

ive got a set of the hi/lo ones in my fairmont, best money i ever spent on the thing..

the hi/lo's use a solenoid to adjust the angle of the arc in the bulb (not entirely sure how it works), but you dont have to wait for them to warm up to flick between hi and lo beam.
as you said i wouldnt replace the hi beam bulbs with hid's due to the warmup time..

With the ones in your own Fairmont, they obviously be H4's. AFAIK with the H4 type globes, the hi/lo setup for the HID's, work with the low beam being the actual HID part and the hi beam just as a normal halogen filament.

There are two types one as you describe has a halogen lamp for the high side, the other known as biXenon has a mechanical solenoid to tilt the beam.
