Ok... Here is the deal....

My t5 is becoming very noisy... At first i thought it was bearings.. But its not a constant wine or anything... Its like a loud on off whiring noise that increases in speed as the car increases in speed... It can only be heard in 1st and 2nd gear. 1st gear is alot noisyer.

I spoke to a mechanical teacher at my tafe, and he said that it sounds like a bearing on the input shaft has started to chew out the input shaft its self, and when its in 1st gear most of the strain is on the front of the shaft, that is why it is louder in 1st than 2nd and cant be heard in 3rd (cause 3rd is in the middle of the shaft). He also said that this is a common problem with the t5 gearbox.

I then spoke to a mechanic who just recantly rebuilt my diff, and he said that it just sounds like a bearing on the 'cluster' has gone and a bearing kit would fix my problem...

Could anyone help my with any info... The last thing i want to do is to take the box to the mechanic, him start to pull it down, find out that the input shaft is stuffed and say, "that will be 150 bucks for my time and by the way you need a new gearbox anyway"....

Any help would be greatly appricated....l

CHeers....

Input shaft takes ALL the strain of ALL gears except 4th.

I'd agree with the input shaft gear is worn and with the aid of front bearings.

Replace the cluster bearings and input shaft and see how it goes.

Counter shaft (lay shaft) bearings are the killer in the pocket and are harder to do.

$150 for a few bearings might get you outa trouble?
do it sooner than later and it might work out cheaper!

Also second hand inputs aren't that uncommon, if yours is worn and only damaged the layshaft a tiny bit, it might get away with patching it up.

I was told that an input shaft could cost me 1200 bucks... I would be better off getting another 2nd hand gear box wouldnt i?

Also could mods please move this thread to the gearbox and driveline page?

Definitely.

If I remember correctly, Stomper was selling a gearbox out of an ED (not too much different to the EF if at all)

If you're getting another 2nd hand g/box, make sure it has the same ratios as the one you have now - the ratios are determined by the input shaft/countergear combination. This means the countergear and input shaft need to be swapped as a set. Otherwise, the mainshaft and mainshaft gears are the same pretty much, except revisions in synchro cone friction material.
Bearings are reasonably cheap, except the rear mainshaft bearing, and the front countergear outer cup, which are pricey.

Sure will. Be aware V8 and I6 input shafts are different lengths and ratios. So an V8 box cant substitute an I6 box and vise versa.
