i had a similar prob in my fairmont with the climate control, we ended up doing tests on the control part, swapped some wires around and now it worked fine, as you said the heater was gettin stuck on, we dont know exactly wat we did but the air con and heater works fine now and has been for about 10 months

You stick your hand in from the bottom, the flap will most liekly be stuck against the front side of the box (closest to the engine). You'll need to pull it back and up (towards the seat). Then screw like mad

It only takes 15-20 minutes to remove the dash. Makes the job alot easier.

Maybe if you've done it a million bazillion times before

For us mere mortals, it take a little (?!?!?) longer.
