Yesterday we took our car into to see if we could get the ac fixed the bloke there quoted us $800 for a new compressor + labour is there any cheaper solution??? its an Ea falcon its been retro fitted al it needs is the compressor

I had the same problem on the same car, for the same price
 lol you could get a compressor from a wreckers, but I spose it could have the same problem for all you know?
I just dealt with it and wound down the windows! |

most wreckers would charge about $80 for a compressor but buy one from a good wreckers that will exchange it if you a/c guy rejects it.
we can supply one and ship it to you if required. |

dont forgot the car needs to be de gassed b4 the compresser is fitted then regassed as i am sure when u disconnect the line the regridgerant will escape and that is nasty s**t to be vented to the atmosphere

What model car is it, mwalsh?
If its R134, or any xR12 (x being another letter such as E) but not R12, then they are far less environmentally damaging than plain R12 which is the CFC based refrigerant (and the most efficient of the lot, as it figures) We did a regas on a mazda 626 RWD bush basher that will never be registered again with LPG - the thing cools better than the original R12 ever did! |

er12 is LPG. thats why there is flammable gas warnings on the stickers in the engine bay.

Yep, what xr8dismantler said, the majority ingredient of ER12 is either propane or butane, I forget which one so we googled a bit for it after learning the ingredients of ER12 and realised we weren't the first to come up with the idea, hundreds had done it before!
Forget evacuating the pipes and generating a huge vacuum in there, we simply ran a few litres of LPG through it at high speed, that emptied all the air out of it 
Dont do this at home, we're qualified idiots so we got away with it Remember LPG is heavier than air and will amass in the lowest part of an area, eg in the pit of a workshop or at the bottom of a valley. If you want to avoid an attempt to make it to the darwin awards, do it on a windy day at the top of a mountain so there is enough wind to blow the vapour away.

Getting back onto the subject. Have you considered rebuilding the compressor yourself? I did one in a XF some years ago with no previous experience, it was easy and S**tloads cheaper than buying a new comp.

i havent actually got a compressor .
but how would you go about it. and did you install it yourself?? |

A few years back I bought a XF fairmont Ghia Ac was stuffed. The clutch on the compressor was broken inside, no gas in system to worry about so removed compressor and disassembled it, then bought the parts required from Ac specialist. reinstalled comp after rebuilding it then had system regassed by same AC specialist.
