Lukey, have a look at the pics below. They are of a connector with slightly larger terminal pins, but work exactly the same way:

Careful now, those pointy tools can - and do - draw blood (I know!!!). I use jewellers screwdrivers for this task - larger one for the locks and a much finer one for the tabs. Have fun. Any hassles, just yell...

OK, gave it a go, but the layout on these plugs are different, and I swear I'm going to snap the 'little screwdriver' if I try to pull it out any harder.
This activity has been damaging the plastic insert and I'd be reluctant to do it to the 'production' harness. Here's an image of how far they came out before they came out no more.... And taking snapshots of these plugs is really bugging me. The flash cause huge reflections. And everything else seems to go into focus except for the damn plugs themselves. I've taken 10 or so pics and not one of them is clear.... Lukeyson

can u get the connector out with it that far out? its been a year or more since ive had one apart but i think that might be all she wrote. Give it a shot

Turn off the flash, and use a brighter light. (or hold the camera super steady)

Yep. 4 x IXL-Tastic heater lights in the bathroom is about the best I can do.
The processor in the camera likes to focus on the multi-colour leads out the back of the connector, rather than the connector... Lukeyson |

OK, got it.
I found a sacrifical connector and split it open to see WTF was inside the bastard. So the outside 'Lock' only needs to pop out 1 or 2mm. The 'inside' lock needs a superfine screwdriver - I'd suggest a sharp pin might be better. The trick appears to be knowing where to put the screwdriver. And I've just tried about 30 times t take a shot that might be in focus so I can show you with some detail the cutaway connector and how to unlatch the pin. Hi light, manual focus, flash, auto focus, changing the auto focus target - man everything I could find. I'm just going to have to admit defeat. Lukeyson |

Actually, this diagram in the Alarm Install guide was pretty close to the mark to what I saw in the guts of the connector.
And now that I look at it, the bit that says 'locking lever' looks like it's not supposed to come all the way out. And that, I think, is the last 'risk' that I needed to mitigate. We're pretty much ready to go with the dash harness swap this weekend. Bring it on! Lukeyson

It is a low-series with navi. Actually, it does up to and includes Fairmont - the Ghia and LWB cars had different harnesses with wiring for courtesy lighting in rear doors and rear footwell (console), plus mem seats, etc. The Fairmont doesn't - it gets the same loom as its lesser brethren. I picked mine up new off eBay cheap - I believe they normally retail for around $500. I did find a Fairmont Ghia being wrecked about 9 months ago over nth side of Brisbane, but they did a half cut on it - yep, oxy cut straight through perfectly good looms on both sides of the car!!!

When trying to get close-ups on small objects, use the macro function of your camera. All but the most compact of digitals have it - usually has an icon of a flower to indicate setting - and will allow you to focus as close as 2". When focussing that close, you'll need floodlights either side of the camera to avoid shadows, as you noticed.
