Bought our Subaru Liberty when it was 3 years old and has always had a bad smell which has progressively got worse, when using the aircon smells like dust. Car is always garaged, short trips to work, nothing out of the ordinary
The car is now 5 years old and i thought its about time we start doing something about it. Here is the in car pollen filter located on the passenger side of the dash........... ................. all sorts of mould, fungus and debris soaked into a filter that is supposed to be white.

Are these easy to access in the car? Man thats disgusting to think that is "cleaning" the air your breathing while driving

yeah im already worried about how much damage breathing that crap in does to a person.
i didnt change it myself, but it looks fairly easy. Maybe because the filters in the subies are located in a way where they turn to muck really fast, they make it easy to change  http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3773 other pics from subies       |

These things are part of scheduled servicing.
Once again, the constant push for cheap servicing leads to corner cutting. |

I'll check auto data tomorrow, (can't seem to remember my log in right now)
I see them a lot, cars with filthy pollen filters. When I ask the owner it always the some thing, I didn't know it was there. These cars are normally serviced by the usual cut price or fixed price shops. Places like K-mart, Ultra-tune etc. Mazda 3's are good for it, because it's a right pain and about 15mins by the time you contort under the dash and removes the fuse box to do it. It's the perfect place to cut the cost for the cheap shops and the reason people always tell me that those shop will do the same service for less.. Truth is, you aren't getting the same service at the cheap shops. |

Are these filters in BAs ? Never checked mine as well.

Your right, there is no mention of it in the service schedule for that car. Most others have the interval around 30 000km. It's still something that should be checked at each service anyway. |

I can't highlight the importance of getting these cleaned, especially if you are immunodeficient. The mould that grows on these types of filters release spores into the cabin and lodge in you respiratory system. Go to a hospital and listen to someone with a pulmonary infection and you will get the idea to change them regularly. The mechanical upkeep of your car is important but this filter will make you very ill. Take the advice of tickford and get it serviced properly!
Do the eb's have one similar? If so will have to check it too. Nurse soapbox now put away.... Hooroo |

I wouldn't worry about getting them clean. just replace them with a new set!

What I mean by clean, get the leaves out of it as this creates moisture. The channel under the windshield is like a big collection bucket for leaves and debris which ultimately end up on the media of the filter. That and cat piss from the neighbours cat!!!
