hey all
in the wagon - the 'cruise' light is on, but then pressing 'set +' or 'set -' the cruise doesn't engage! dammit! tell me why! lol - it was working a few weeks ago, and the buttons all work perfectly, so i'm lost

you've got my bloody ford manual volume 2 which has all the cruise control stuff in it and your posting this question????? lol

i discovered it on the way to a mates where i am now! so i don't have the manual with me, and i have no electricity at home to read it even if i was there!

Hmmm, It could be the brake light switch.
If not, the cruise control uses a back-up switch, to dis-engage the cruise control when the brakes are applied. This switch is on the Booster. I have had an issue with the switch on the booster, so mine did exactly the same as you are describing. Hope this helps Chris

Mine is doing the same thing.
i have already installed a new break switch so it can't be that. What are the other options?

it is irrelevant if the brakes are applied, so it won't be the switch i'd imagine?

Check the brake light switch and fuse, if they are ok, try a new set of buttons.

the stop light switch and the other brake switch are default to the "off" position so that if one of them fails or both of them fails the cruise just wont work, as opposed to not turn off when u put your foot on the brake... first thing to check is are the brake lights on all the time... the stop light switch on the pedal box is the most common cause...

Not correct, brake pedal switch is normally open as stated, but the master cylinder switch is normally closed.
All I can suggest Fraser is you check the cruise control servo, that the cable and the attachment is secured properly - it is fitted and rotates clockwise, and clicks in - check that it hasn't come loose. The areas that can cause what you have: 1. Brake pedal switch - okay as you have said. 2. Clutch switch wiring blank plug for auto's (see below). 3. Master cylinder switch - pull the plug, short with wire, go for a drive. Electrically, using Greg's manual, pull the cruise servo plug - you can continuity check everything in the system bar the servo itself if you have a decent cct diagram to follow, without pulling things apart, get someone to operate brake pedal and steering wheel switches. This will also check if the clutch switch wiring is shorted properly with the auto plug as well.

Not 100% sure, but I think that if the brake light fuse is blown the cruise wont engage.

No fuse no cruise. The switch on the brake booster was F**k on mine not long ago. (it is the backup switch and even if unplugged cruise will not engage)
