Folks,

How easy is it to replace the evaporator under the dash or is it better to replace the whole heater box?

You shouldnt need to replace the whole heater box unless its broken. Just seal it back up with a good silicon and it shouldnt leak. Mind you as you probably know changing the evaporator is a dash out job and you need to disconnect all the air con pipes.

even better!
thats a $40 fix + gas with a second hand pump!

They need to be looked after! I've replaced 2 pumps, since I've wired up my thermo's to run flat out with AC on, rather than just a dribble.

make sure they instal PAG oil or somewhat if using a second hand pump.

Its advisable to replace the drier also, as alloy fragments may have entered the system.

bloody hell where are you getting $40 fixes from?? :)

No second hand pump for me, just replaced my original pump with a 2nd hand one and it only lasted 5 months. So with new pump, gas, flush, drier + condensor we are over a grand baby!

$40 from a do-it-yourself wreckers.

And a regas for $100 cash, you do all the work and they just charge it up.

Go see a regas place first (a radiator place is your best bet as they dont purely do ac) get to know em, tell them the issue, your going to replace the pump etc, can you vac it down for me (remove gas) and when I come back replace it.

they'll say' look theres no warranty if it leaks etc etc, its a pretty basic system, replace rechage and keep off the revs with AC on, they're a crap scroll pump.

I take it Greg you're doing your own labour changing the evaporator, plus pulling the front bumper off for access?
