phongus, there's no cylinder of gas, the gas to inflate the airbag is created by a (really small) amount of a certain explosive.

Hmmm, thanks data. I thought it was sort of like a mixture of small amounts of chemicals which produces a whole lot of gases to fill the bag rapidly...maybe that's the explosives then hahaha.

phong =P~

I am sure the chemicals used are some what toxic if pro longed to it. Also was reading airbags are only supposed to deploy on front or a minutly diagional crash other crashs other then that the airbag is made not to deploy.

just get a horn pad from the wreckers minus the airbag, then just take the airbag light out of the cluster. no one will ever know, until a serious crash that is.

I believe it beeps at you if you do that, but you could always shove a bit of tape over the dash, mine had that for it's roadworthy

Also I don't know if you'll get a decent fitting hornpad, yes i believe some of the early xh's which were based on ef's didn't have them, but i believe they used the xg wheel, correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct, the air bags are only deployed if the SRS computer thinks they'll be helpful. There a few inputs into this.

The air bag system on B series is more complicated, with two stage air bags, seat sensors (determine if someone is in the seat and if so how heavy they are, to determine if a half and full deployment is best), side sensors (and side air bags).

An XHII non airbag wheel cover looks exactly like an EF/EL unit - but it does have a 'longreach' badge though.
Probably easier to get a deployed item, cut away the airbag, and rerivet/bolt the cover back into position. Get a passenger airbag resistor and plug it in. Remove the Passenger airbag(if fitted), fit a PAB resistor also.
That way the light will stay out, and won't beep.

data_mine wrote:
As for the airbag deploying unexpectedly. There's three fail safes in the EF/EL airbag system. two crash sensors, a 'safing' sensor, and electronics diags. If any one reads funny the airbag unit will blow the fuse, killing the system. Sure there wasn't any airbag warning lights previously?
Also the power flow is only allowed to go through the airbag in the one direction, so the chances of setting it off are very remote.

No messing around with the steering wheel/electrical circuits recently?
I'd be checking the clockspring out very thoroughly ASAP.

Ford airbag systems are non servicable and don't require any testing or maintenance throughout their life.

Beemers and Mercs are about the only servicable ones out there, and require regular tests and checks.

Besides, there would be no testing on earth that could ensure this kind of deployment doesn't happen.

Doubt it, pretty well known fact reliable airbag life is about 10 years

Or IS it? Does the ford user manual book say anything about getting it checked? If not then you may be on to something!

ive spent a fair bit of time browsing through the manual and havnt come across anything like that but now you mention it i will have a look tomorow for something about it. or there should be something in the service things at the back.

yeh thats right. it says in the book that the light will turn on when you start the car while the system checks all is well then it will turn off but if it stays on then there is a problem and you need to take it to ford and get them to have a squiz at it.

i put a leather steering wheel on about 2-3 years ago.. but no nothing recently been done to it or the electrics of the car before it went off.. and nope there was never anything amiss with the airbag light before it happened.. i was out on the highway sitting on about 100kays nothing hit the car and there wasnt even a pothole in the road. Its been into the local ford dealer and they told me nothing and charged me 60 bucks for there trouble.. not sure what to do now, apparently to pass rego the light has to come on for a certain amount of time.

The car determined, that the airbags either wouldn't have helped or would've made things worse. (or of course it was faulty)

They'll only go off if the car thinks they'll help.

Should have had your power nap mate, they save lives and also car crashes. In reality, the amount of kilometers will not justify if something should or shouldn't work. s**t happens, but sleep deprivation can be cured.

I just hope the airbag on the other car went off to save their lives. Hate to say it but not all things work...I am sure my car has a lot of s**t wrong with it that I just don't know...could drive good one day and blow up in my face the next.
