I have just got some LED's to experiment with. I was told that if I file tops of the LED flat it would give me a better light spread. I have found this to be true, but in relation to this I have been told two different things, one is that I should leave the top of the LED frosted, the other is somehow make the top of the LED clear. Which gives me the best effect? (frosted top or clear top)

Also does frosting the sides of the LED make much of an improvement?

just flatten the top a tiny bit, and frost the whole LED, i did that with mine and it works a treat...

if you "frost" the LED it will make the light even more diffuse, which is good for "mood" but if your using them in say an instrument cluster or tripcomp, dont do it, (this make more of the light from the LED go where its pointing)

i sanded the top of the LED's flat, so i couldn't help from frosting the top of my LED's. It will be going in my climate control behind the LCD screen along with 2 other LED's (3 total placed side by side)

If i don't frost them doesn't it only light up a very small section only? thus having to run lots of LED's side by side to light up the screen evenly??

No, thats why you flatten the tops, frosting the LED's will just scatter the light in all directions, if you flatten them off it will be fine for backlighting LCD screens,

if you want you can test the LED's after youve flattened them to see how big the beam is.

so far i've flattened the tops off and in the process of flattening the tops off i also frosted the tops as well (i used sandpaper to flatten them). Is there a way to make the tops clear again after frosting them?!

dont worry too much about it, but if you wana make it clear again, use finer sandpaper (and then even finer sandpaper) but its not all that important

i wanna make it clear again, becuase i get this weird effect: because the tops are frosted and the sides arn't, I get this "ring" of light where the LED is behind the LCD screen,

how close to the screen are the LEDs?

mine er about 10-15 mm away, i didnt bother polishing the tops after i flattened them and i didnt have any troubles. you may need a reflector arrangement in there too.

mine are pretty close, like about 5mm.

you know what i mean about the "ring" of light? its becuase the tops are frosted and side's arn't. So when placed behind the screen it looks exactly like a ring of light like this: O
