Hey guys,
Last summer I put in some leather seat covers, painted the interior black and had a few little issues that I need some help with. Issue #1 Paint chipping on panels. I used a plastic primer, then a black interior paint for the panels, but have found panels are chipping and scratching. Is there such a thing as non-chipping primer that'd solve this? I'm going re-spray a fair few panels inside the car this summer. Issue #2 Parcel shelf. The seats are all an ivory-cream color, but the parcel shelf is still that dull grey! How do I go about coloring this or adding a new material? I know it's not something I can just pull apart, so how would you go about this? Thanks guys, any advice would be great. Dark_EF

The parcel shelf can be removed. undo the mount brackest for the child restraints, then remove the plastic clips. With the back seats folded down, peel the shelf away from the rear bulkhead. It then just lifts out.

Oh great, I had always assumed you couldn't remove it.
Now, I guess I can find some more leather and just cover the old carpet look! |

When i painted the centre console, vents, door handles and kickpanels in mine i just used alot of sandpaper then painted over it with straight paint from a spray can, no primer.
If that doesnt work, try a clear coat over the top of what you would normally do.

I had sanded mine down pretty good, and even had some panels I didn't use primer on.
Both flaked and scratched, especially around the center console and kick panels. That's why I'm wondering if anyone could suggest a good primer, or ... a non-chipping paint? |

I used a super cheap auto plastic primer, and spray putty - it sounds dodgey but it worked aye. It also depends on what sort of sand paper your using, as a minimum i would use 120-140 and paint over that, using thin light coats. After a few coats sand it back with 400 but not back to the plastic and paint over that, thats should give you a good smooth finish. It took 4 days to paint my console between coats of primer, spray putty and paint. But it has lasted 5+ years.

Also, i should mention that alot of plastic interior parts would have been armor all'd previously in the cars life, a key ingredient of armor all is silicone. And paint don't stick well to that, so if they have ever been exposed to armor all, give them a thorough cleaning with hot soapy water several times, and leave in sun to dry. And remember this, a good paint job is 99% preperation.

I'm unsure of if any products like that were used on my car previously, but I think after some good prep and a few days such as the above I should get some good results! |

While I'm at it, the parts in my car that have peeled/cracked/chipped I need to completely strip of the paint, what's the best way to go about this?

On Plastic - Sand Paper my firend, everything else will most likely screw with the finish. Dont use anything more abrasive than 120 but.

I'll head down to bunnings tonight and grab quite a bit because there's a fair few panels I wasn't happy with. Luckily my twin sister works there (20% discount!)  Also, on the non plastic parts (such as top of dash, tops of doors) I used a vinyl dye, which worked really well but the finish wasn't as nice as I'd hoped. It's a little faded over the year. Should I just add another light coat of dye or use some sort of finish? |

Hey Mate,
Never actually painted vinyl before, but if it was me then i would dye it more. Reason being is the vinyl is flexible, and paint is not. Where is the dye will be absorbed by the vinyl and still remain flexible so no cracking. Cheers Mate,
