Hi guys,
Anyone have a fix for a broken Chrome shifter button? I don't really want to spend the big $$ for a new one (if i can even find it) and mine is a leather cuppacino version which makes it hard to find a replacement second hand. Cheers, Troy |

i doubt it.... i had one with a snapped chrome button, and didnt really look like it was fixable

that reminds me of still got to look at mine, I've heard you cut them back and glue them o another base works best, I have a feeling it could have something to do with the loose tolerances they aloud for the leather.
by the way to get the old button out you have to unpick the leather, then pop out the little cap thing to reglue it. If glueing doesn't hold out you could away whack a black button in there and just refit the leather. If you glue the button test it for a little while before replace the leather, unless somebody can tell us how to plastic weld it properly.

I wish the ba pulls up and uses a screw to go in from the side, with a big fat shafts, the ef threads on pushes down and has a much skinnier shaft.
basically I had to make a couple wedge pieces and modify the black button to get it to push the rod down. to get it to mount I turned up a bit of pvc that it just pushes on snugly, later on I'll add a screw to the design but for now it holds alright. then drill the pvc shafte out and threaded i so i can screw it on to the shaft, the hardest part of it all as i had to makeshift a tap with an old shifter shaft haha. the rest was just a lot of trial and error, back and forth etc.. Although next one I make I can probably borrow a tap off a mate so that'll make life easier, only if I'd thought to ask him first time round, ohwell.

If you have or can get a non leather one with a chrome button you can swap the buttons over by cutting a small hole in the leather over the screw hole and then swap the button.

Yes!
There is a tech doco around the web somewhere showing how to fix them. I did. The chrome button has a slot underneath. Simply drill a hole up through the handle, lining up with the button slot. Screw in a self tapper screw which allows the button to travel in and out without falling out. Throw a piece of high density foam behind the button before assembly which keeps the button in the outer position. Easy. Mine was done a few years back and still works fine. I'm regretting throwing out my original shifter before I learnt of this method.  Mike

Cheers, Troy Just ring around all the wreckers in the phone book mate, a lot of wreckers dont even know how rare cappa really is so they will sell it cheap if they have it, because they think no one will ever buy it. Im in the process of getting EL cappa interior for my ED everything including seats, carpet, door trims, dash, console, hood lining ETC. for a few around $200. Not sure yet because a mate who knows the guy at the wreckers is trying to get the best price, at this stage thats what he said. But still im happy to pay a little more. I guess my point is ring arround, and not just the ford wreckers, all of them. You will find what your looking for mate. Josh |

That depends mate it wont take long to find a wreckers with what is needed. Cappa is not as rare as people make out.

Yeah fair enough you can buy another from a wrecker which will likely break also but i know that my button will never break off ever again...

Let's see: one self tapper screw- free from the jar in the shed.
One foam earplug: free from work. Why are you guys not using Jool's easy and permanent shifter fix method?  I did mine a couple of years back and no problems yet.Mike, Oz

I did mine 4-5 years ago and still no issues and cant tell its been repaired. The funny thing is that the fix was so easy once thought of its not funny. Maybe i should sell a kit ( screw and earplug ) and instructions on ebay for say $20 a pop lol. |
