Here is my latest effort using blue SMD LED's from HK, cheap as chips but the result speaks for itself.

I thing I did do was use some double sided tape inside the cluster to "strategically" tack some foil to, just to help disperse the light better.

The Odometer is filtered with both a single piece of your run of the mill copy paper, plus some baking paper

I also whacked in some white LED's into the AC unit just to see how it looked, but am unhappy with the way the light is dispersed. That is going to be another late night project I think :D

Do you find that to be a distraction at night when you're driving? it looks very bright.

Looks amazing btw!

Cheers Mate, it's not as bright in real life as the camera was on a slow shutter speed. The camera made it look like there's a blue haze but it is still bright, brighter than what it was but without being a distraction. I do love the odometer though and clock, they are bright in the day as well as night!

Ok well that's good to know then. I don't really understand about the baking paper? where do I put that and what does it do? also how did you change the odometer backlighting from orange to blue?

Hey there,

if you check ford-interior-f14/pics-of-blue-led-dash-el-falcon-t78185.html?hilit=blue%20led%20cluster&start=15 you'll get an understanding of where you have to go to do the odometer colour change. XRFairmont67 has been kind enough to give you photo's and a run down. Where you get to the last picture, that's where I put in a piece of standard paper as well as the baking paper. I used the baking paper to help spread the light because it is sort of like a diffuser the way the paper is made. As for changing the orange to blue, take out the factory orange plastic piece behind the actual LCD display and throw a blue led in the bulb holder directly behind it, presto!

The secret is T5 led's that have a flat top. The reason most people have blotchy clusters is because the led's they are using have a rounded top which projects the light in 1 direction (straight ahead) where as flat top leds spread the light.

by the way to get my needles to light up I used nail polish remover to take the orange of them so they ar now clear....

if you take the needles off be sure to use the diagnostic mode on your dash to calibrate the gauges once the needles are back on... as you can see in that photo of my dash the rev gauge was out (the picture is while it was idling) i've since fixed it though...

Is it true that flat ones give better light distribution?

yeah they do, a lot better. But they have to be the flat smd type, not the traditional style LED that has the end flattened off on it.
