I've always been a bit skeptical when it comes to painting dashs....If it's not done right i ruins the look of the whole interior. You've got to pic a colour that compliments not only the colour of the interior but the colour of the car itself. BenJ's painted dash looks spot on so if yours ends up like that then you will have done a top job.

Just a tip though, once you've finished the color coats use a MATT clear coat to seal it. The reason being (and I found out the hard way), if you have a glossy finish around the instrument cluster it is impossible to see the instruments when the sun hits the dash near it.

Take the whole dash surround out as well as the T-Bar surround etc, everything comes apart (vents, buttons etc) just take your time and pay close attention to how it all came out.
Usual deal with painting anything.. preparation is the key. I didn't use any plastic primer when I did mine and it shows, I'll be re-doing it all using primer with the spare surround I have fairly soon. Make sure it is all clean and free of any grease, dirt etc. Paint all of the pieces at the same time so you know exactly where you are in the process. Many light coats with at least an hour to dry between each is a lot better than a couple of heavy coats. I think I did 4-6 color coats and 2 clear on mine from memory. Good luck, and remember to take your time.. rush it and it'll look crap.

Hi, the whole dash or just the plastic around the cluster and centre console?
Dash removal is best if doing whole thing. Vinyl or plastic paint (even Septone, Supercheap Auto old favourite) work well on actual dash as they dry like a rubber film.... Three or four years in the sun and it is still black, although starting to blister a little. Do air bag same colour whilst you're in the mood. For hard plastic bits use a plastic adhesion primer and then spray with whatever spray bombs you like. Getting a cheap airbrush and doing wood grain or some gansta tagging would be f'ing great. I might do that actually. Next time out Pick-A-Part I am so going to grab a set of plastic from a Fairmont........  Like any spray paint - Light coats, avoid runs... Also beware, as mentioned, that a high gloss finish on the bit directly under instrument cluster could result in cluster being hard to read in certain lighting conditions. |

My dash is gloss black (used pre mixed guide coat haha) and I have no issues with seeing the cluster at all.
Just use Plastic adhesion primer, high build acrylic primer, sand and sparay your colour (acrylic) then cut and buff to a shiny finnish (use prepsol at every step to clean!) Mine Attachment: Dash sprayFM.jpg [ 60.16 KiB | Viewed 255 times ]

I did my EF Fairmont interior/dash in VHT Matt black. Looks really good. I cleaned all surfaces down with turps beforehand, let it dry then several light coats of spray, it looks like it came out of the factory that way and has lasted years.
