why am i an idiot for wanting to do up my car? i am gonna be doing the following:
complete rebuild of engine 3.7 LSD Diff T5 new shock new wheels&tires new bodykit new interior new seats etc etc

Righto, so the pieces are replaced, but THE CAR has still travelled X amount of K's. No ford workshop will change it back to 0 just because you have replaced everything. Leave it as is, and when you go to sell the car, tell the buyers that it had everything replaced. And theyll under stand. Also, if you do ever manage to wind it back, you cant wind it back any further then when you bought the car. Its recorded on the pink slip when you buy/sell a car, and as it travels through the databases, it WILL get picked up. Happy changing

There will always be parts on it that are old/worn that you haven't considered replacing.

Eproms ( usually the 8-pin variety ) are common for storing data, not only in domestic electronics like TV, Audio and Video but certainly in vehicle electronics. Should you be silly enough to want to change the data you will need the Ford factory equipment or a gang reader which you plug up to PC's. With that you can read the raw data but you will have to decipher what equals what when you dump the data onscreen.

The way the instrument cluster places wind the odo forward or backward is basically the same as powering up the cluster, and feeding it a +5V square wave signal.....
The backyard way of doing it would be 1) Supply power and ground to the required pins on the cluster. 2) Wire a speedo sender up from a transmission (Preferably removed from the transmission) 3) Connect drill to speedo sender, and spin.... Note: I cant remember what the speed = frequency is, but the speedos wont read anything over 280-340km/hr. This means that to wind a speedo backward 1 kay (I.E. winding it forward 999,999Kms) takes a looooong looooong time. Typically an instrument cluster specialist will want the cluster for 1 week, and will charge you $250-$300 for the privlidge. (I looked in to this when I changed my cluster to a high series one many years ago).

If you have $650 to spare go to ford spare parts and ask for a new instrument cluster. no questions asked.

No one has ask yet, but did you change the cluster as well... Might explain alot...

I tell you the ECU has absolutely no impact on the odometer reading. Anyone who says the odometer wound forwards or backwards when the ECU was plugged in is full of s**t.
I have done many cluster swaps on many E series Falcons (don't ask why) and they all read what they used too. Some where auto, some were manual, some had trans ECUs some didn't. All the same end result.

I thought the reading was stored in a IC attached to the cluster. Nothing to do with the ECU at all...
