So I've just brought myself a runabout car (Petrol is getting expensive)...
Only thing is when its on gas Im only getting 150kms out of a tank...
And 300-350 on gas full highway driving..
Anyone know why this could be?

Other issues:
-Very Gutless
- Won't start on petrol when i flick the switch..(thinking electrical?)

Any help or advise would be great
Cheers
- Ash

okay i have a duel fuel EL, and i got 545 kms exactly out of 1 tank (gas) highway driving, driving normally, so mild acceleration etc. and around town mine would be around 300-400, and that includes getting loose and random chomping.

another thing with the gutlessness---- i can tell the difference with mine, gas does decrease power but not hugely, but i dont know wat type of car urs is.

now to the starting thing, mine starts much better on petrol, if its cold and i flick it too gas before the car heats up then the car will shudder or idle lumpy, and even stall. happend a few times.

but yeah other from that, gas is gold.. dunno how u drive.....is ur foot constantly on the flooor??

good luck mate.

With the switch, its asthough it dies automatically, doesn't stall or anytihng like that...thats why im thinking its an electrical problem (maybe the gas isnt' swtichin over properly), as when its on petrol..it just cranks over but doesn't fire up..

Don't have my foot to the floor (as 1tank was all highway driving..and only got 350kms outta it)

have you worked out exactly how much it's using?

i.e. [ (Litres used) divided by (kilometres travelled) ] X 100

I'm using about 18L/100 city driving almost every tank.

You need to fill in everyone with more details.
eg.
What the hell is it? An eight, sicks or buzz box, is it a Escort, Falcon or otherwise like F350 etc.
How many litres does the tank take to fill from empty?
Does it miss and does it smell strong of LPG while running?

Start with the basics first, check air cleaner, spark plugs, leads and dissy cap (if it has one), then go from there with gas tune, none of these will have any effect on the reason it doesn't run on petrol, as LPG will fail run before petrol will.

I have no idea about Nomgas? never heard of it but I am sure someone could help you out with this.

Yeah sorry guys I should have been more specific,
Its a EB Fairmont 6cylinder,
NOMGAS is the company that installed (factory from ford),
its an IMPCO Model E with a 225.

Ltrs from empty is around 60ltrs for the gas tank,
No Strong smell at all.
I've just had the system tested and had a new Float put in (Gas readings).
2 things i've noticed, when i fill up, i put in 60ltrs or there abouts so its filling to full.
The gauge reads full 3/4 (as you can only fill a tank to 80%).
But the gauge on the acutal tank itself only reads half (where the shutoff valve is).

-Out of afull tank i range 150km street driving and 350kms straigh hwy
-its very gutless on gas but goes hard on petrol
-Doesn't switch from gas to petrol (As i have to hold down the spring on the converter while starting up on petrol) 2 man job to start the car. And even then it takes ages to start.

I have a hunch its running very rich, so I've been told.
I guess the best thing to do is take it to get it tuned...but im worried its going to cost a bucket load to do so, unless theres anyone here that does tunening? (Im happy to pay them).

Ill post some pictures of the converter and mixer 2nite for a more detailed look

Cheers guys

- Ash

what would you rather do, spend a 'bucket load and get it checked and tuned? or spend bucket loads on gas and for it to be a 2 man job to start?

Of course I'd choose the latter, reason for me posting this up on fordmods was to get an idea if I can work around this, not just taking it to any mech saying fix it at what ever cost...

There is obviously something horribly wrong. But If you don't understand what it is and what it's doing, you really need to get it to someone that does.

Just to let you all know on the update with the gas stuff..

Had the converter overhauled, after getting the repair kit into it, ALOT of the components inside where stuffed (wear and tear big time) that was the major factor for gas running rich and gutless performance..

Secondly the mixer air valve and mixer itself was VERY dirty, so i cleaned it out (same with the throttle body (as far as i could get my hand in) and replaced the air valve..
After a good tune shes running fine,
Tomorrow going to replace the Plugs, Leads and do a service..

- Ash
