I was just looking at new falcons on ford.com.au and saw the engine names. They have the Boss 260 and 290 for the performance V8's, then all the 6's are called Barras (e.g Barra 240 and 245 for the BA and BF XR6T donks, Barra 180 and 190 for the standard BA and BF I6's). But then the standard V8, like you can option in an Falcon XT, is also called Barra (barra 230 I think it was)... Anyone able to make sense of this?

Yeah, I've read this ages ago, but never really though about it...

You're right though, it doesn't really make sense to codename the 4.0 litre motors "Barra" and then name the 3 valve V8 a "Barra" as well....

Hmmmmmm.....

ba i6 is barra 182, all the numbers are the power. boss 260 and 290 have similar technology whereas the xt v8 is different so is called the barra with 230kw.

so you want to tell me that the Barra V8 is closer to the Barra I6's than the Boss V8?
I relise the number is the power figure.
Isn't Boss also the name for the Windsor V8 block with Cleveland heads?

They're just code names Ford give to their engines.

The BA XR6 T was codenamed "Gull" which was to symbol the fact that a "Gull" is a bird that soars high and practically s**t all over everything.

That is seriously a true story. :D

Well the boss is the quad cam 4 valver, where as the xt v8 donk is only the 3 valver. I'm assuming its the lack of that 1 valve that warrents the BOSS nametag useless to that donk.
Really i have no idea, call up ford and ask em.

The six is a Barra 190, and the V8 you get in a XT or Fairmont (and Fairlane) is a Barra 220, even though it's really a Boss in detuned form. The Boss 260/290 is what you find in the XR8 and GT.
