i'll answer one question at a time.
Engine is Based on same family as mazda6, however is greatly improved. Diesel Is different, and XR5 Turbo has similar setup to Focus XR5 turbo.
.

Pity on Ford not using the Mazda 6 diesel, they were released just as I left the Mazda dealership but a work mate bought one, awesome bit of gear, maybe the Ford 6 speed auto might get back the 9kw and 40nm difference on the road.

Did they give the Mazda 2.3L a different tune?, they f**k the Mazda 6 for outright performance when they went to 6 speed and electronic throttle, in manual form the old 5 speed was a weapon, to easy to loose traction in the dry if the owner drove them spirited all the time, also had more than a few complain the 5 speed got better fuel economy and we could not find any faults to be causing this. (Owners that just updated models all the time)

You really have to take a Mazda 6 MPS AWD for a run, I would own one tomorrow if I had the money and they came out in a wagon, on special testing grounds  0-235 back to 0 is awesome, feels very stable, and this was from a Mazda Road show car that wasn't running right and had been flogged way beyond what I did. I wouldn't do that in any RX8 I drove, I never felt secure over 160km.

i was very very very impressessed when i saw them at the motor show. Heaps of rom inside, looks and feels very well-built and is alltogether very nice looking. The standard feature list is very good also.At 41-42K for the XR5, its alot better car then many that cost double the price i recon
