This is an interesting read about the new falcons with 6 speed auto gearboxes.

that quote had me interested. 1. Typhoon now comes with automatic transmisions? 2. new pyphoon is faster down the 1/4 mile with auto tranmission than with manual?

Yeah the new BF Typhoon has a 6 speed auto.
Not losing any power between shifts on the auto would make it quicker down 1/4 maybe.

The new 6 speed might also be very efficent at transfering the power from the engine to the tailshaft and not be loosing as much as the old 4 speed did.

True. Must be a way better torque converter.

wouldn't be in the torque converter, its just the way the transmission picks up between gears rather than slip in, it grabs crisper.

is an interesting read though, looking forward to trying one.

6 Speed auto would be an awesome match for the turbo motors.
What lag?

i did the ford New Model Introduction training stuff on the BF's the other day. The box uses a different clutch/brake setup so that it doesnt disengage the current gear until the next year is setup ready to accept torque, so absolutly no delays between shifts...

"All gear shifts from 1st to 6th or 6th to 1st are power-on overlapping shifts, that is to say during the shift one of the clutches must continue to transmit the drive at a lower main pressure until the other clutch is ready to accept the input torque"

I am almost positive that the 6.0L HSV autos are one or two tenths quicker over the quarter. Stretching my memory, it was basically a shift kit through the box.

Its funny how auto's are becoming more efficient than manuals. The new turbo diesel peugot is around 10-15% more fuel efficient in auto trim compared to manual.

more research being put into autos, because of the massive american market, where a manual is as rare as hens teeth except in exotics.

apart from the technology it has a hell of a lot to do with the gearing. much shorter 1st gear helps it get off the line and then the gearing is very evenly spaced to keep the car in optimum rev range.

So true Daniel.
The old 4 speed auto was starting to show it's age in this era of 7 Speed boxes...
