Ford funding deal to secure industry

The Federal Government will give car maker Ford more than $50 million to help secure its Australian manufacturing operations.

The financial assistance package has been announced in conjunction with a $1.8 billion commitment by Ford over the next 10 years.

The Government's contribution includes $40 million for the development and manufacture of the next Ford Falcon and Territory vehicles at Geelong and Broadmeadows in Victoria.

It also puts forward $12.5 million for the development in Victoria of a light commercial vehicle design, which will be marketed in more than 80 countries.

The projects will create more than 250 new jobs at the Geelong and Broadmeadows plants.

Prime Minister John Howard says that in return for the Government assistance, he expects Ford to offer the Australian car parts sector "every fair and reasonable opportunity" to supply the necessary parts for these projects.

"Ford's decision to undertake these new projects in Australia is indicative of the company's confidence in the local automotive industry," he said.

He adds that the deal is a sign that the company has confidence in the Government's industry, economic and workplace relations policies.
Industry security

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks says the deal is very important in securing the future of Victoria's automotive industry.

"The competition is enormous," he said.

"We know that the new players are China and to a lesser extent India.

"They're looking for opportunities for assembly, for components and even looking at design as well, which has been a feature of the automotive industry in countries such as Canada and Australia.

"This was crucial."

Federal Opposition treasury spokesman Wayne Swan says the investment in the manufacturing industry is badly needed.

"I would welcome any package to assist the manufacturing sector in this country that has been absolutely neglected by John Howard in recent years and has been doing it tough," he said.

"Any package that the [Federal] Government can put forward today in conjunction with the Victorian Government is obviously welcome."
