I was curious as to which would be better, I'd like to get the V8 for its famous rumble but I already got a cleveland for that so I would got for the turbo. never driven one but been a passenger in a stock turbo VL bombodore and it felt impressive. On the downside for me, to be able to get a new car I would have to claim the hail damage on my car and insurance would most likely write it off.

You really have to ask yourself what you want the car for whether it be the 6cyl or V8. My brother loves the thrill of that turbo boost. The problem with that is that you need moderate foot pressure on the gas pedal most of the time. That can be risky business.

On the other hand, personally I love both my windsor and modular V8s, I don't need to give them a bootfull to get pleasure from them. Both are quicker than stock but I love driving around town with the windows wound down listening to the sweet sound. Ford lovers are truely blessed to have the best of both worlds!!

What if you were looking at this as a second-hand purchase sort of deal, though? A lot of xr6t's are being sold with around 100,000km's on them now.

I know a fair few of those jap cars (without turbo timers) pick up turbo issues after about 100,000km's. Are the falcons as bad? Would it be smart to only look at cars with turbo timers?

What about the 8's, any common faults they tend to pick up with age?

XR6 Turbos dont require a turbo timer, as they thermosyphon after the engine has been switched off.
although it is still a good idea to let it idle to cool down for a bit if you have been giving it a hiding, a turbo timer is not a necessity.
the only real issue is if the metal oil lines get blocked due to poor maintainence...

How's that supposed to happen, both the oil and water pumps are mechanically driven (crank for oil and pulley for water). Engine off stops both.

Don't need a turbo timer, just don't turn it straight off if you've been giving it a flogging, so the turbo isn't still red hot.
If you shut it off while the turbo is red hot, any oil still in the turbo will bake on.
They cool down alot quicker then older turbos because they are water cooled.

If I've been on boost up the hill to my place, I will idle it down for 30seconds to a minute before I turn it off.
But then I've never shut any of my cars straight off after flogging them, it's just mechanical sympathy and commonsense really.

Little harder when you go up hill to get home, but for me it's about 1.4KM of slight downhill to home, so end of the trip is certainly easy on the cooling system.
