circular flowing air. rofl. What's an IAT sensor got to do with air flow - it's a temperature sensor. Unsure on the magna's but it's probably in a place far enough up the intake system that any flow changes would be normalised by the shape of the various other components around. (manifold, throttle body)

(Wish I was a mod......)

Oh yeah, it wasnt the IAT, but definately a sensor not being able to measure the circular flowing air.
It was a common problem, i remember reading that it was the reason why K&N brought out the rectangle filter for the magna's.

"The fitment of a traditional rampod cone / round shaped filter causes a swirling action of air which in any other application is beneficial to the air flow of the vehicle. Unfortunately this swirling action promotes a bad running problem on 90% of Mitsubishi's"

Lol still haven't dragged.

His car is running extremely poor.

He dragged my mates 1987 Camry auto 2.0 with a whopping 385 000k's on it and only won by a tiny bit.

I raced the same camry up to 90k's from stop and won by 15 car lengths!

I'll report back if anyone is still interested.

I looked over his car today and made a little bit of progress.

I found my EF shifts better in economy with foot flat to the floor, if its in power it revs out too hard as its changing, econ mode it seems to shift just right and not rev too high... and i always just leave it in D although id put it back in 3 for the drags...

A stock VL manual will have no problems beating you! They are lighter rev freer have a 5spd with better gear and diff ratios. 1/4 mile times for a stock VL are still faster than ED. I only just bearly beat an auto VL in my 164kw EL and ive beat many EA-Ds.

There must be something wrong with your car then, i can beat those things shifting at 4000rpm.

an ED in good nick with a decent driver will beat a VL with the same. yes they are lighter, and yes they have better take off ratio, but they bog down at about 80 kmh. this is where the party has just got underway in the ED, (starts to haul at about 50 kmh). Vl will take the start and the ED will be even by halfway, infront on the line by half to a full length.

those VL turbo's arnt much chop stock, when i was in qld with the EB they were never an issue, even from standing start where they should have been. and believe me, there are a lot of VL turbo's in qld. even the super hot ones wenrt overly worying because by the time they built boost, you were backing off coz speeds were getting up lol.

a stock ef manual should sit right next to a stock vl turbo, they're only 150kw and ran a 15.5? from factory.

stock ED's must be slow as s**t then, i can wip VL turbos quite easy in mine and even if they are boosted high, they have to catch me, and by that time i have already backed off.

my mate has a auto ed with 2.5 exhaust and extractors only and flogs any commodore up to and including VT, VX and similar. The only things that worry him is the V8's. All VL's he's come up against are left for dead. hell he would beat me and my EA manual would flog VT and VX, VY 6 cylinders.

New dude;
Just find a nice quiet bit of road and practice stalling her up.
You don't need to blast through 150km or anything stupid.
Just practice stalling it up and ripping up to 60 or so.
Stalling an auto isn't as easy as it sounds when your on your L's / new driver / no auto experience.

s**t, I remember my fist time stalling up an auto for a s**t hot launch (dad's old VN when I was 18) - I didn't have enough pressure on the brake pedal and the bastard thing took off anyway...luck nothing was coming the other way...

So your better off learning these things somewhere nice and quiet.

As for ED vs VL - if they were both stock. Both in equally good (poor???) condition, both auto, both driven similarly, then my money would be on the VL until around 70km (by bugger all, mind you), then the ED would take over.

A manual ED would punish the VL both off the mark and anywhere on the tacho.

But then, It doesn't really matter does it? Becuase even if the VL was slightly quicker - the ED is the better car.
