I had a EL Fairmont Ghia V8 and when I sold it had 299,460ks on it. A mechanic did a compression test and it was all fine. He said it was one of the best engine tests he had ever done.
I reckon when a Windsor hits 300,000ks the wear in period has just finished.
Only thing I would do when you get the car is get a new set of sprak plugs and some Bosch ignition leads and you'll be happy motoring for ages.

If its in really good condition, it probably worth around 4-5k, but the km's detract a little from the price.
I'd offer him 3k cash and see what he says, as you were saying the auto is playing up a little, and may be at least a few hundred to fix that.
But if the motor seems to run smoothly, etc. I doubt it will give you any drama's. They're a tough, reliable motor.
