Wondering how i would go about holding the harmonic balancer so it doesn't turn while i undo the centre bolt?
Tips/advice welcomed.

use a long handled breaker bar. after fitting onto centre bolt 'rest' breaker bar on on chassis rail. with a 'quick' flik of the ignition [on/off - do not start/run motor] the bolt should undo .... to tighten is opposite ie put under other side rail ... careful you don't overtighten

Screw driver through the flex plate if trans is disconnected from engine. Put a socket and rachet on one of the converter nuts if trans still connected & sandwich plate will stop rotation. Flywheels usually have a spare bolt hole that can be accessed through starter motor hole.

Which way does the bolt loosen on the AU V8? Is it clockwise?

I've done this on an I6 and it works well, can't see why it won't work on a V8.
Unplug both coilpacks first though.

It'll be a std RH thread.

You could use a rattle gun and impact socket to crack it, but I guess you won't have room even with the thermofans out.

Actualy, as teh windsor is a shorter motor, you would be amazed what tools can fit between the rad and the motor.air ratchet would certainly fit.

Yeah, that's a good point, lengthwise I'd be a 4 cyl.
If you have a gun with enough decent torque, I'd think this would be the easiest to try.

Had a real good look at the harmonic balancer today and there is no loose or bulging rubber and there is no play in the balancer either. It's very quiet just that i get the odd vibration now and again doing 100 clicks out on the highway.
Does it sound like the balancer is in the early stages of it's demise or could it be something else like needing a wheel balance?

I would say it might not be the balacer..

it could be a worn uni in the tail shaft or rear extension housing bush even a lump in a rear tire can cause a vibration at 100kmh
