You can upgrade to a bigger one that just takes the original ones place, but if your not doing the engine up theres no point

Exactly
The fuel pressure regulator will just slow it down anyway. Just buy a bosch replacement part. Good and reliable.

A good question would be how much can the standard one handle?

the only reason i something ask is coz i think the one in there is on its way out and want to replace it with good. bosch sounds like it might be the go. is there anything else that i should replace while im at it. i see on ebay they have the whole units for sale with the sender, filter and everything, all you have to do is take out the old one and put in the new one. but im not sure on the quality of the pump with these

I replaced my fuel pump about 5 - 6 weeks ago with a Goss brand fuel pump. It runs the same pressure as before and it's still happily fueling my 24lb injectors on the standard fuel pressure.
