Should the 4 speed out of my BA Fairmont Ghia 5.4L fail (not long now), what can I replace it with?
That is, will the 4 speed out of a V8 Boss BA/BF be a direct replacement? Are the bellhousing patterns the same?

Just gaining an idea because more often then not 6cyl BA's and XR8 are a plenty at wrecking yards compared to the 220kw 3v engine Falcons.

From some research, if correct, all the 4speeds in the V8 BA lineup were the BTR M97LE.

Yes or the last BF's and all FG's used the ZF HP26 6speed. But you'd need to do a harness and PCM change to make it work because they have a Mechatronic Valve body. Plus they used a 2.5:1 diff to work with the ZF's very low 4.17:1 1st gear ratio.
So the original BTR is going to be the easy way to go.
Oh yes the Boss engines use the same gearbox but the converters have different stall speeds. So use your converter with whatever box you get to be safe.

No worries man. There's other options too but they're more of a custom solution than the ZF conversion.
