if you get it for a significant amount cheaper might be worth the risk. but i'm pretty sure that sellers who sell cars on ebay.com.au don't have to actually sell the car after the auction - it's not binding, or used to not be.

A lot of buyers of classic cars have to buy interstate and they use the services of inspection people who go right over tthe car. Ring Shanons and the like and they should be able to recommend someone or do a search on the net apparently they are well worth the money considering the investment you make.

What you need is a close mate or travelling relative to have a look for you.
I bought my Sprint from Sydney over ebay, it was just lucky my old man was up there on business.
I recommend you ring the seller, talk to him over the phone so he knows your genuine.
Make a point of how serious you are, and even make him an offer, he may even pull the auction and sell it to you off ebay if he hasn't had much other interest.
Good luck with it!
Just out of curiousity, what sort of car is it that you're looking at?

you could always ask a member who lives close buy to the seller to go have a look for you, might not be a good as a rac and nrma.

I did it mate - got my XP fairmont from a guy in Victoria. I emailed him heaps and chatted to him on msn, You need to get info and try to suss out what sort of person you are dealing with.

The only killer is freight from East to west is a expensive - expect to pay about $1000 unless you know someone in the trucking game. west to east costs are like $400 cheaper.. :? Luckily I got mine across for only $600
