G'day all,
I've just pulled the engine out of my Mustang and I'm trying to solve a long running mystery of what type of engine it actualy is. I know it's not what came with the car as the VIN tells me it's a 289, 3 speed auto and the car is suposed to be white. It's acutal got a 4 speed manual and it's black, and I'm pretty sure it's a 302 block.
Now with the engine out I've been able to read the casting number a lot more easier.
D1ZM 6013 AA (not sure if the 3 might be a 5), there's also a little tag underneath with 25J0 which I have no idea what it indicates. Can some one please help with this?
I have got so far that it is a 1971 block from a Mustang but I'm not sure what the "M 6013 AA" is for. Thank you in advance.

Regards
-Warren

It'll be a 302 Warren,
The last 289 blocks produced had C7 engineering numbers. that's because 302's replaced them in '68.
Another quick way to tell is at the back of the block behind the intake. A 289 will have trench in the casting from one side to the other whereas a 302 will stop half way and there will be a machined flat section.
25JO is actually 0J25 which is 25th October 1970.
Strangely the M in the D1ZM suggests a Motorsport origin but I don't know of a 302 block other than a Boss 302 service replacement block that could have that code. Has it got screw in core plugs?

Going through my Cartech book on V8 fords,

D1ZM indicates 1971 Mustang, and yes it appears to be a service part no for a motorsport block.
Thats all i have
Brett

Thanks for that guys, well it's a 302 for sure then as the trench in the casting stops halfway and then is machined flat in one section (which has a number stamped into it, I'm assuming this is the engine number?)
The core plugs are the stamp in type, so I'm guessing not a Boss then?
So what does this Motorsport code mean? How is it different from standard blocks? Is there anything else I can check to find out if this block is different to the norm? Thanks again!

I don't want to be throwing too many questions at you but what do you make of this? It was found engraved under both of the rocker covers when I removed them today. Just a past owner leaving his name? Just wondering what the numbers 5835 c/s meant (if anything)
