G'day,
I have picked up a secondhand explorer manifold and I was wondering what is the best way to clean the manifold. It still has it's original paint on it, although cracked and peeling.

cheers,

Jase

They weren't painted from the factory. The original finish was natural aluminium. Glass bead blasting is the best way to clean them.

i just used a metal scourer to scrub off the loose flaky bits and then lightly sanded it and blasted it with some vht paint.

I would use a scourer or preferable a wire brush first then give it a light sand. If you wanna paint it I would recommend metal primer first, or you could go a semi polished look (lots of sanding).

Hit it with Mr Muscle oven cleaner, just dont leave it on too long as it will eat the metal. Good for removing gunk from the bottom of the lower though.

+ 1 for the oven cleaner, leave it on long enough and it strips anything on the manifolds lol, so yeah, don't leave it on too long. I sprayed the s**t out of mine, left it for 5 min then water blasted it, came up a treat, ate all the brown gunky s**t from inside the manifolds too
