Hi everybody! I want to start putting some work into my ef2 XR8, Ive done the body work now its time for engine mods etc.
I bought it for $1400 for my bf and I to start working on together.
So far ive put on 18inch chromies, new water pump, starter motor, front ba xr8 blue lightning seats, rest interior from fairlaine ghia, new $2000 sound system (sub amp head unit 6x9s and fronts), new shocks front and back, typhoon body kit and full respray in electric blue, chome xr8 badges and new tickford badges.

1st question! What are the best modifications to do?
2nd question! Where can i get the parts from? Im in SA
3rd question! How much did everyone elses cost?

Im a girl and im new to all this stuff :)

Oh and a question, does everyone elses ef xr8 run hot? Its got expensive coolant in it no other probs that we can see, just runs at the top of the normal range.
Also has a steering problem. You can turn a little each side and the wheels dont move, if you know what i mean. lol
Also needs a new power steering pump as its leaking. will be put in on the weekend.
They guy that had it before us, the dero ran it into the ground. But the owner before him spent thousands on it has had a full diff rebuild that costs $3000. So im hoping to put about $5000 more into it and she'll be a sweet ride for a few years!

Love the paint, and the typhoon bar looks very nice on this, especially with the EL head light molding.

As for work:

Get some 24lb injectors, larger MAF, and a J3 tune, you're away laughing.

No need for bigger injectors yet.

Go extractors, exhaust, inlet manifold, throttle body and MAF. Underdrive pulleys too. All the bolt on stuff. Get it tuned with a Quarterhorse.

If you want to go further go a cam and alloy heads. If you want more cubes go a 347 stroker or start with a 351 Windsor roller cam engine that can be stroked out to around 420 cubes. Its a better way to go than a 302 based stroker as the 351 block is much stronger. Pick the right inlet manifold and bonnet clearance isn't an issue.

No there isn't, which is why I said that after the links I posted, which you will then need injectors.

They said they wanted to spend around 5g, well theres 5g.

Common fault for the EF/ELs to run hot. One or more faulty thermo fan relays. They are located in front of the airbox or (looking at it from another angle) behind the passenger side headlight assembly.

Best bang for buck modification to do is full exhaust system; let's that sound out too. If you want more power, these motors will cost you a lot of money to get decent power out of them; therefore a raptor supercharger is the best bang for buck.

Yes you might baulk at the odd $4.5k it will cost, but, when you start adding up the price of cheap heads $1000, throttle body $300, MAF $300, intake $600, roller rockers $300, underdrive pulleys $300, all gaskets, coolant, oil etc $300, then someone to tune it and someone to install it you don't get much spare change, and there is a lot of time off the road. A supercharger you and your bf can bolt on in a few hours, comes with a tune for an almost stock motor and the price includes everything. That, and you will still have more power than the engine package.

If you want more after that, then there a few threads on windsor builds. Best bang for buck top end package would be from trickflow which comes with every gasket and bolt to install. From there, you will still need a bigger MAF, throttle body, fuel pump and then someone to tune the car.

If you feel inclined to learn to tune your own car, you can purchase Moates Quarterhorse which will allow you to watch what your engine is doing live, datalog and you can make tune changes while the motor is running. If you go down this path, you will also need a wideband oxygen sensor to watch your air/fuel ratios; nice to have a gauge to monitor this on the dash somewhere. Innovate LC-1 is a good option.

From here, your transmission might start to let you down depending on how you drive. Automatic's can be rebuilt to accomodate the power or you can convert to manual. Seeing that the diff was recently rebuilt, that should be fine but have a look at what ratio the diff is. 3.7:1 gears will have the vehicle move off the line a little quicker. Mal Wood is recommended for transmission work.

Hope that helps.

The biggest issue you wil have with a 351, is the manifold, Check my thread in my signature for the hassles that are associated with putting a 351 in.

In my opinion it is well worth the effort, and the little 5.0 is just too damn expensive for little gains. The 351 responds so much better and will require the same amount of cash to get a greater overall improvement.

That sounds like lots of money and effort for not much gain.

People don't sell the 220KW engines cheap!! :)

$2700 motor and trans fitted. $1600 headers and twin exhaust system fitted so thinking of going down that path and having a good reliable car for years to come.

The need for speed will bite, and you'll just end up replacing the "good" bits on the AU220. For similar money you can shop around and get good alloy heads, intake and cam and yeild much better power.

Reliable you would think, but those heads have poor valve springs that have let go in more than a few motors. Though it can be fixed with a valve spring kit from Crow cams at $300. At $2700 + $1600 + $300 = $4600. That is a full raptor supercharger kit you can fit in a few hours and you will still faster than the 220kw+exhaust combo PLUS less of a muck around getting it fitted, tuned etc. Remember AU have coilpacks, you have a dizzy for starters...

Actually my EF doesn't have a dizzy. And we have just found out were having twins so our thinking is a 17 year old motor might give up the go eventually. Which we would prefer it to be changed now and not when we have 2 screaming kids. Lol

Congrats on the twins! If that is the case, I wouldn't be touching the motor at all for more power. The bubs probably won't sleep well with exhaust drone or being pushed into the boot when mummy or daddy gives it a bootful? How many kms has it got? These windsor motors are good for many many kms 300,000+.
