the balancer in the xr is up to s**t. vibrates the whole driveline from about 1500 rpm upwards :S. my question is; is there much of a difference between standard replacement and underdrives?

also would i need a puller to remove the balance or is it as simple as unbolting the four bolts and removing it?

any help is much appreciated. cheers

The underdrive your referring too is the crankshaft pulley the belt rides on which is bolted to the harmonic balancer.

The harmonic balancer is the big hunk of steel behind it which has all your timing marks on it. This is used to dampen all the harmonics that come through crankshaft and is also obviously used for balancing.

You will need a puller to get it off the crank, but the belt you will have to get off first which is just four bolts.

If you need one cheap i have the one that has come off my motor sitting in the shed, only 114,000k's so should be alright, didnt cause any dramas before hand.
Thats if you need a cheap way out of it, if not for about $210 you can get a nice Powerbond one which is the same as what went on engine.

Mate, its nannas_ed's thread. I'm pretty sure Trick Flow EL is talking to him about the balancer.

so if i understand correctly the balancer on the 5tr is a 2 peice not like the ones found on the 6cyl where its one complete unit.

does this mean if i buy a new unit from say repco i have to bolt my original pulley onto it???

thanks for the replys

Yep that is 100% correct.

Yep that is also correct, but for the price that Trick Flow EL is offering you the powerbond for, i'd be snapping it up and not even bothering with a std replacement from repco.

No worries mate, anytime.

Correct. 4 bolts holding the pulley on the balancer.

Off with the belt and off with the pulley. You need to remove the retaining bolt and washer from the balancer... a big f--k off bolt that goes into the end of the crankshaft. Err... 24mm socket or thereabouts IIRC.

Balancer is keyed, so only goes on one way. Take note which way the pulley bolts to the balancer, as it CAN go on backwards... which will be interesting for pulley alignement :)

About $170 for a genuine ford balancer from motortraders/similar IIRC.
