G'day guys,
I have just brought an el Fairmont v8 and I am looking at doing some mods. I am starting with a 3.45 lsd diff from an ef which I picked up pretty cheap, I know what's required to fit the ef diff onto an el but because I am going from a 3.23 single spinner to an lsd do I have to change the "speedo transducer"? (22 grey) I have done this to an I6 before but not a v8, I have done some research but couldn't find a lot to confirm. Where is the transducer located on a 302 Windsor I'm very new to the v8 ball game. Any help would be awesome, Cheers |

You need to change the plastic speedo gear yes because of the ratio change , not the fact your going from single legger to LSD.
The speedo drive on the V8 is in the gearbox extension housing exactly the same as on a 6 cylinder.

if the diff ratios are the same in both diffs you shouldn't need ta change anything

If your changing ratios, go for a set of 3.7's make the ratio change actually worthwhile. So much more punch out of them.

Thanks for the replies guys your help has been great.
I was just a little worried and unsure but now I can rest my mind. "Johnson stroker"- I like the idea of a 3.7 ratio, is there a speed transducer suitable or will this just mean the seedo will be a little out? Cheers |

I just went from 3.45 to 3.73 ratio in my au ghia, to help with speedo error ive fitted a black 23 tooth speedo gear to the transducer, initially the speedo was out by -8%, so changing to the black 23 tooth gear it has reduced the speedo error to -3.7%..
so it is only 3.7kmh down at 100kmh ... |

I hope this isn't too off topic, but I have a four-pinion cop interceptor diff out of a XD and I was wondering if they're the same model Borg Warner as in the late E-series?
What are the 3.7s like to drive with Troyman? |

no, the xd is a 75 series which has 25 spline axles where the el is 78 series and has 28 spline axles..
you could use the xd centre if you were to use the xd axles. but its a bit of a down grade from the std el 4 pinion centre.. the car drive nice with 3.7"s. its more punchy down low without reving to much at cruising speeds, the ratio change by itself has chopped .3 of a second off my 1/4 mile. fuel economy has improved by 2 ltrs per 100km in city and 1 ltr per 100km on freeway. |

I was under the impression that the LSDs out of Cleveland-powered cars were the larger series?
The 3.7s sound great - what rpm are you doing at 100kph? BTR? |

the 78 series diffs were not used until 1991 in the eb falcon.
everything before that was 75 series unless a 9" had been fitted... with the 3.7 gears on the btr it sits at 2450rpm @ 110. |

I put 3.9's in my 5.0 5 speed AU ute.
Picked up 2-3l per hundred idling around town and about a litre per hundred on the highway. I reckon its because in traffic you don't have to rev the car getting it off the mark , its happy to just lump along and on the highway at 110 its sitting right in the middle of its torque curve and quite happily pulls up hills etc in 5th. Its a bit noisier because its reving harder when travelling along , which a lot of the car buying public wouldn't like. Doesn't worry me because my ute is f**k loud anyway. In saying about the fuel economy improvement I was having some fun the other afternoon annoying a a*** on a bike that kept undertaking me at traffic lights. I did manage to see 99l per 100km then.........................................

as matt said.
and mine being auto I don't have to use as much throttle to get it up to speed so it don't labour much on hills or at all while cruising.. |
