Hey guys,

My gearbox is on the way out. Does anyone know what type I should get to replace it and if it is worth spending a more to get a more durable gearbox?

Also, does anyone know of any decent gearbox specialists in the Sydney region?

Cheers

6spd manual. Box will cost between 1500-3000, then add about 2000 max for parts + labour.

Who are you kidding. 4500 will get you a new t56, then you need all the goodies that go with it, allow 8-9k for a 6 speed into EL V8

$8-$9K!! I think I will stick with the 5 speed..

Is there any different types? eg, can you get stronger ones the others or there not too much difference?

How much would it be to overhaul the 5 speed one you've already got and get it rebuilt stronger?
Maybe get 5th speed gear changed to improve economy on highway ie a taller gear (smaller number).

Does the Mal Wood jobbie increase power handling much? Is there a choice in the ratio of fifth or is it all stock ratios?

tko600, 5 speed will take alot of grunt too.

Around $3500 for the box, i'd say 6-7 grand for a kit.

If its the auto. I'd be rebuilding the box or getting a C4 conversion.

TKO 600 would be the ultimate, but I don't believe its a straight bolt in proposition... Bellhousing, tailshaft, crossmember, shifter hole etc all need changing, and you may need to do tunnel mods.

Is the T5Z the Mustang Cobra box? This is apparently the box used in the T1 & T2 T-series Falcons and it has a higher torque handling.

Your only other option is a G-Force kit from the States.

Stock ratios, but you can ask Mal for different ratios if you want. It isn't so much how much torque it can take, but how you drive it. Ask Graeme

If you are going to a 3.9 with the better engine, this is the combination that I would suggest. New TKO 600 (5008 with .64 OD),New Tremec bellhousing, New sandwich plate, New starter, New ACE 11'' special billet steel flywheel, New 11'' pressure plate with a billet steel base plate (no distortion at high revs and explosion proof), New 11'' HP clutch plate, New gearstick and knob, New 31 spline yoke, New mount and crossmember to suit, New speedo gear. @ a total cost of $5920.
With this kit you can reuse the clutch fork, clutch cable, tailshaft etc and the gearstick will be set up to go through the same hole in the floor and console and furthermore the clutch will hold 600HP with ease.
This will leave you with a complete V8 T5 kit that you should be able to sell on the open market for $2000 leaving you with a very cost effective upgrade to your car. Regards Mal

What about a full rebuild to standard specs?
I paid $1800 for it, then another $400 to get it ready for a little more power.
