Hi all,
I have a weird noise thats just started over the last week or so thats doing my head in - at idle, there's a sort of squeaking/rubbing noise that sounds like its coming from the passenger side head / rocker gear maybe? It pulses at roughly the right rate to be valve gear related, and as soon as the revs get up above about 800 rpm it 99% disappears but I can juust hear it accompanied by a bit of more conventional tappet type noise - not clattery, but louder than it normally was. Once moving, the car seems to drive normally, the engine sounds OK, power seems OK etc. If I come to a stop the noise is gone or very faiint - but if I turn it off and leave it for a few minutes (say, going into a shop or something) then when I start it back up the noise is there again...then once you get moving it goes away as above...I'm really hoping its not bottom end or piston slap type noises but I'm thinking if it was, it'd get worse with revs, not go away... thoughts, please?

have you taken the rocker cover off to have a good look and try wiggle things around?
Or even while the cover is off. get somone else to start it and you inspect the rockers. but shut it down before the oil flys. lol.

yeh, I want to do this, hoping to get a chance to do this later tonight - do you reckon it sounds more like rocker /valve type stuff than piston/bottom end?

without hearing the noise a squeeking/rubbing sorta noise can be anythin from bearings not being lubricated to a slipping belt or a pump ceasing.

yeh, I know, pretty vague description - its not a belt, dropped those off this morning, noise still there. Just about to go and pull the rocker cover off to see whats what..

right, so, took off rocker cover - its the frontmost rocker on the passenger side. All rockers look fine, all pushrods are straight and rotating fine. All feel smooth when running except the front one which feels a bit `rough' and corresponds with the noise - as I increase revs slightly the noise goes, to be replaced by a tappet type ticking - which I can stop by applying finger pressure over the valve - so, any ideas as to what's going on here???A video for your listening pleasure is below:

I think its OK now - what I did while I had the rocker cover off was dribble anti lifter rattle stuff (I ran a bottle thru it earlier in the day and had a little bit left ) down the pushrod into the lifter - then gave it aout 10 mins., dribbled some oil down for a chaser then ran it for a few seconds. Next morning, started it, it gave a couple of ticks then - no sound. I've since put it back together, still hearing an occasional noise but its running heaps better, no ticking so I think it was just crap in the lifter - I'll give it an oil change and new filter this weekend.

You got me slightly worried about the oil pump now ! - are they prone to jam like that? Not heard of that one before..

my brother had a oil pump jam on his xd 302.
ended up being small metal piece lodged in the pump and it absolutly shaffered the dizzy drive gear and we couldnt work out why.
after pulling the pump out we finally got it. little bugger it was.
