Hi does anyone know about how to curve a distributor. I have a modified 351 Windsor in XF Falcon me and my sons club race it, and I have just purchased an MSD ignition set up. Distributor came with all the springs to change curve ect. I know the basics to do this, but What I don't know is how do I figure out what I should be setting the advance curve to. I have all the basic tools in the shed at home. I don't want to spend big bucks paying for Dyno tune or sending the distributor away to be done. I would like to try doing it myself. Any advice would be good thanks.

The best way is a dyno....that way, you can tell if your goin backwards or forwards in what your doing.
Do you have an AFR meter in the car ???....they are damn handy.
What have you limited the total advance to ???.....32* to 36* is the go.
Where have you set the initial advance to ???......10* to 14* is the go.
I'd try the "middle of the road" springs first....see how that goes.

The optimum advance curve is dictated by your engine components and fuel burn speed (octane), more timing is not always better. The best way to get it right is on a dyno, next best is the open road with an accelerometer (eg G-Tech), wideband O2 meter and good hearing. Anything else is simply shooting in the dark. For example 2 degrees change in timing can easily gain/loose 20-30kW on a perfomance engine. So that dyno tune is not an expense, it is an investment that releases the full potential of the peformance components you have already spent lots of $$$ on
