Wasnt having a dig frank. Your car is obviously not tuned for high octane, probably no need for it. But there's a lot of usefull detergents etc in ultimate, its a shame cant get lower octane fuel with those goodies.

For 1/4 mile times - i assume these were on different days? If so, nuff said.

If it makes you feel any better, as far as I know Tasmania doesn't get any 98RON fuels!

The bestway to get the best out of 98oct is to advance your timing until it pings under HOT working load then retard your timing 1 deg at a time , when it don't ping anymore retard the timing a degree further as a safety margin, Just be sure to use it all the time or she'll ping her guts out
also by doing the timing it should better fuel economy as well.

I checked up on this vortex oct rating recently to find out that its only 95 RON. My fathers engine runs a 10.8:1 comp ratio & was tuned to 98oct (ultimate) and runs great but when he filled up wit vortex it pinged badly enough to think there was a problem, But once he returned to Optimax or Ultimate it stopped, so I enquired with a Caltex rep who told me the ron rating

some caltex servo's do have vortex 95RON & vortex 98RON like the service centre on the M4 vortex 98RON is almost as good as ultimate but overall i think ultimate is better then optimax as more bang for ya $$

For those that are not in the know all fuel in NSW comes from the kernell refinery which is owned by shell. What this means is that all premo's are in short supply. Thank god for LPG.

Lack of 98RON Fuel??? At Brissie I saw it for 97.9 the other day. Anyway, on the subject. I have tried running 98RON in my XR8 but haven't been able to notice any improvements. Internally it is stock. Do you have to run several tanks of it before you get the improvement or what??

I ran 91ron in the fbt once and it ran like s**t, even stalled once! It couldnt idle, it really just was f**k up on it to be honest.
NOW i know why the fuel door says "USE PREIMUM UNLEADED ONLY"
Runs like a dream on pulp, so i guess they tuned it to run on the stuff?

Ummm, the label on your fuel door means that you can only run at least 95 octane in it, Opticrap is 98 so in all reality the optimax shortage should not worry you, just use safeways premimum unleaded instead, or whatever is cheapest.

Yesterday Optimax arrived at my local Shell! It was only 107.9, so there was a huge queue along the main road to get into it! (I've never had to wait for a pump at this servo before!)
