Have just got my rebuilt motor back from the doctor, and have noticed that the idle is shocking, it stalls and is seeking at idle all the time. We have replaced the leads and everything like that, but my baby still idles like crap.

I was looking back through the forms and it seems to me there may be an air leak around the explorer manifold.

How do i test for air leaks around the manifold. Or could it be something else.

I live in the country GOOD HELP IS HARD TO FIND.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

whilst the engine is running, run some engine oil along the areas where the manifold meets the head and see if the oil forms bubbles, if so, thats your leak.

does it ping at all whilst driving? mine had the s**t idle and pinged and the timing was way out. so i got the dizzy adjusted and base idle done aswell.

Intake leak will definately create hunting on idle.....

did you use all new gaskets and torque the manifolds down to spec?

also base timing/tps/isc will all contribute to a rough idle if they are not set properly.

All new gaskets where used. They had trouble getting the explorer manifold because their supplier didnt know which one it was, so they got on for a gt. The base timing was set, and they adjusted the tps to the correct reading. What is isc??

Im not giving them any more money until it is fixed...
It is soo disapointing when you get your engine rebuilt and get it back and its worse than when you gave it to them, even if it had no compression when i took it to em.

Thank you, im not sure if this has been set, where is it and what do you have to do to set it....

Also why does the tps have to be modified for the explorer manifold. Could it be damaged?? Is there a replacment that does not have to be modified i can purchase???

Backprobe your TPS with a multimeter and check that the voltage at idle is less than 1volt.

Had a similar problem with my 5.0L. Exhaust gasket was leaking so at idle air would be sucked in and mess up the O2 sensors reading.

I fixed that now i've got lifter noise, bloody things won't pump up.

Anyway check the exhaust manifold gasket and see what you find.

holes of the tps have to be elongated to be able to get the right reading.

idle speed is the thing on the back of the throttle body. make sure its plugged in, as it wont idle without it plugged in, adjust it so it sits at around 650rpm or so, also make sure maf is plugged in

Thanks guys. It is all plugged in.. I just got a sensor check thingy done, where they plug a computer into the computer and it reports any error codes. It chacked out fine appart for the EGR sensor.

I am stuck in a hard place...

EGR shouldn't matter, it's always going to come up that because you don't run EGR with explorer manifold, its just not functional.

Have you definately done TPS right? should read 0.9 volts
