I just test drove an XR8 AU1 auto and god damn it sucked. The SS gen3 6 gear manual s**t all over it. Totally different car I know but not totally different prices between the gen3's and AU1 & 2 XR8.

So wait until that GenIII bites the dust and the windsor still has another 500,000 kms left in her.....

Holden make quick cars, no doubt about it. That's fine if speed is ALL that you are concerned with.

Yeah even a 5 speed AU1 will fell much faster than the auto, it's really not a fair comparison. The Gen3 has a lot more grunt than the 5L, but in many tests the XR8 came out on top for a better overall package. You also have the Gen3 engine concerns, personally I wouldn't buy such an expensive car if there were major concerns with engine life and oil consumption. The later model Gen3's are better but the problem is still there.

I did add that comment about the 6 speed manual SS and it does seem like a direct comparison, but without comparing I will say that I Was very dissapointed with the XR8. It really felt that my au I6 falcon had almost as much power. I wouldn't mind hearing from someone if they have driven both the xr8 AU series 1 and 3 and how they compared.

We all love Fords but we can't deny the fact that that AU weren't that good.. Especially Series 1.

The series 3 220kw engine is far better to drive with more power everywhere in the range. A 5 speed 220kw XR8 will give the earlier Gen3 engines a good run, but obviously still cannot compete with the current 245/255kw (what ever they are currently running) engines. The series 1 185kw engine is ok but as you felt, isn't much quicker than the standard I6.

If you look hard enough you might get lucky and find an XT V8 manual

I went in an s1 au xr8 manual, went okay. The gen 3 is alot faster but sounds dull compared to the ford. I remember in most magazines the journos couldn't get over how much better the ford sounded than the ss. The au xr8 might not have been the best looking or best performing car, but it sounds bloody awesome when given a good stir.

I own a series 1 from 3,000ks (demo). I really have not had any mech probs. The AU is a better car than the VT & VX holdens in drivability.
The only thing some people find wrong with them is their looks. The 4litre mtrs were a improvement on the E series & with IRS handle well & if lowered and aligned correct do not scrub the tyres and looked like a loaded up datsun 180b with the rear wheels spladed like the holdens.

I too did take a test drive of a series 1 XR8 in 1999 & thought the performance not that much better than the six so decided on the ghia for its dash layout over the XR series.
In the end you buy what you like not what others think of it.
