when you say a timing rattle what do you mean?

pinging? timing chain noise? noisey lifters?

the more info you can give us will help you get more useful info in return..

Are you bridging the connectors ??
Sounds like your adding too much advance ??
You have to bridge two connectors so EEC holds timing with you set it..

Do you have to do this while the engine is running? or just with the ignition is on? (Bridging the connectors that is)

that will be your problem then.. you need to put her in diagnostic mode.. ( cant remember the process myself.. search will reveal it tho)

it would also be worth checking if your balancer has slipped.. ie to make sure the tdc mark is actually at tdc. pull the #1 sparkplug, and carefully use a screwdriver or similar to feel when the piston reaches tdc. make sure your timing mark is in the right spot..
