changing the water pump pully wont help much.

underdrive refers to the harmonic balancer being smaller than the factory one so it spins all the other accessories slower. so there is less drag on the crank.

from what ive heard there are none available for the AU.

Basically you want your WP pulley to be larger than your crank pulley. It sounds like you have a Pre-AU pump which means you could likely use the ASP water pump pulley that you'd use on an E-series if the offsets arn't too far out.
Do you want my Excel sheet for determining pulley ratios? Pm your email and I'll send it to you.
I tried to post it on here for everyone but it wouldn't let me post it.

Thats because from Factory the 5L AU is already underdriven.

Hi and thanks for the excel pulley sheet.

It was interesting to read though I'm not 100 % I understood it all:-))

Regardless - I replaced your factory AU WP measurement of 114 mm with my aftermarket measurement of 144 mm which dropped the ratio down from 71% to 65 % ... Which is still no where near the ASP of 53 % ( from memory ) ... But for me the 65 % ratio is fine as its better than factory ... which equals a plus.

No wuckers Brad,
Well the ASP is actually 29% but you're right every little bit helps. Remember this shows ratios as measure of difference. It's actually the moment of inertia that makes the difference...like opening a door from near it's hinge as opposed to opening it by the handle. That's why shrinking the crank pulley makes the most difference, because it changes the moment of inertia on all the other pulleys.
Here's the link for anyone else who wants to try it....

Oh yes - just to reconfirm... Whilst I too, though the AU pulley system was under driven it turns out whilst the HB is smaller than the e series its still not and under driven set up.

AU ford HB is 145mm and the WP pulley is 114 mm ... Consider that with the e series aftermarket ASP - where the HB is 128 mm and the water pump pulley is 152 mm ( now that's an under driven set up ...! )

You got it Brad, Sorry I'm not very good at excel but yes, to look at one pulley on it's own is a mistake. It's the relationship between all the pulleys that makes the difference.

If you look at the bottom far right pink section you'll see the difference in drive between the ASP U/D's vs your 144mm pulley. You get about a 7% improvement.

Thanks :-))

As far as I know the factory AU HBalancer is the only one available and measures in at 145 mm and I'm not sure if the ASP WP pulley that measured in at 152mm would actually fit ... As its already tight now with the 144 mm (5.7 in ) WP pulley

Anyways - I think its a viable option for any AU ford owner to know if they need to upgrade their WP .., they can go for the flowkooler WP with the deep dished march performance WP pulley... and receive some improvement over factory.

Yep the integral pulley on the Explorer balancer is a PITA! Still you can get around it with some custom machine work.
