as per title
im looking at upgrading my ute and was looking at a few mods (eg supercharge the bugger)
looked at a FG XR8 pick one up newish for around $35k then spend approx $15k to put on supercharger and get it dynod etc (which im sort of turned off now you look at it $ wise compaired to a new GS)
or do i get a XR6 Trubo
or do i wait for the new XR8 to come back onto the market and see what they use for the motor ...but dont know when they are coming back
or do i buy a GS ute for $50k and spend a few k for a tune for the same price as modding the others

also not sure on weather i should get an auto or a manual
now ive had manuals all my life and the only time i dont like them is in bloody traffic
and i know you can tow more with an auto which is better for me
but im not sure if i stick with a manual or go auto....whats your thoughts

The word we have heard is that the GS will replace it and the XR6 is still being thought about.

That'll be disgraceful if that happens...in fact I think it's disgraceful that you can't get a V8 Fairmont or base model Falcon or wagon or ute!

Get the GS, but be warned, with the power they put out, the standard brakes are NOT up to any kind of punishment.

The brakes are fine for the odd emergency stop, but any spirited drive will have them crying foul quickly.

No, the GS is a XR with FPV engine (interior, brakes etc. same as a XR). This is why they're much cheaper than a GT.

GT/P/E is the FPV with all the goodies.

well there you go i also thought they were the same brakes how wrong i was

"Brake performance in the GT, GT-P and GT-E is excellent thanks to the big Brembo brake package, with a strong pedal and no evidence of fade on a spirited downhill blast.

Unfortunately, the GS makes do with the old XR8's sliding calipers, which have less bite and don't inspire as much confidence as the Brembos of its bigger brothers."

Screw both of them....

And go visit a Holden dealership and buy a SS-V Redline.

Much better value and you get to teach Ford a lesson. 2 birds with one stone in my books.

And yes, I am a Ford man, but I do recognise value and stupidly on Ford's part when I see it.

But then you're stuck with a Holden? :?

Yeah, I feel the GS is a dilution of the FPV brand. They should stop [over]charging so much for the 4-pot Brembo's and reduce the price of the GT a bit*.

Taking an XR body and dropping in a GT engine (detuned, apparently the difference in the tune, is the throttle position is locked to only 75% so you don't get the peak power) does not a FPV make. All you end up with is a pov-pack FPV.

*dead set FPV are making a killing on the cost of the Brembo brakes. Especially on replacements, they want near on $900 a set of front pads (for the 6-pots), and about $2000 for replacement front rotors. A set of better quality DBA5000 rotors can be had for ~$1100, then it's only ~$600 to replace the rotors as the hat is reusable. Better pads can be had for ~$450. Again the caliper prices are way over the top too. They're not Brembo's best range of calipers.

True... But when they are as crappy as each other these days, it sometimes stops mattering.

Looking on carsales, you can have a Redline SS-V ute for $46k drive away, maybe a little less for an ex-demo. Or you can have a bog stock GS for around the $57k mark drive away. Yes, there are some cheaper and some with options, but most of those have been marked ex-demo, so they'd be full of factory concessions.

The GS has cloth trim, mono screen, povo audio and no GPS. Would hate to see the price of one with those options added.

And in the end you still aren't able to get Brembo's, still have an XT looking interior, and still have that F**k useless annoying starter button. After waiting 5 months for a custom build car.

They really need to be $10k to $15k cheaper to be a viable alternative.

Really, at those prices, it would make the most one eye'd brand supporter think twice. Sad but true. :(
