Hey everyone,

I've come back from a couple nights camping, been tinkering around with the white Xr8 a little more. Cleaned the interia, fired it up on petrol, was really hard to start. Had a dig around the engine bay and found that the car has BOTH a MAF (as it should, being V8) and a MAP sensor like the 6cyl. Yes the MAP is wired up, but it doesn't have a vac line plumbed to it! It is very, very hard to start on petrol & has way too high an idle, 1700rpm. Seems to rev ok but smells like it's running rich on petrol. MAF is wired up as well.

I pulled the kick panel off & had a look at the ECU - can't see the catch code sticker, but it has a big blue thing piggy backed in the J3 socket, with a Ford warrenty sticker on it. Anyone see that before?

Yes it's a factory V8, it's the factory engine, and it has an impco LPG system fit as well.

I'm scratching my head with this one, never seen anything like it. My next play time is on the weekend, so i might hook up a vac hose & see if it's any easier to start on petrol or if it will idle slower. Reason to do that is that the out of date LPG tank has run out of LPG. Starts & idles fine on LPG when it has some in the tank. ;)

Anyone have any idea's what's up with the J3 or the MAP?

Cheers

ToranaGuy

The MAP just measures atmospheric pressure.
not meant to have a line on it

Why would it need to do that, for the LPG conversion? The other Xr8 i have doesn't have a MAP sensor on it.

Cheers

Really? Strange. I must have never seen a series 1 EB V8 before.

Anyone have any idea on the blue "j3" chip with the ford warranty sticker covering it up? I know there were some ECU faults with the early EA's, but i thought they were reliable enough by the EB?

Cheers

Yes BAP like all stangs had up to '93. After S1 it was deemed air density was sufficiently catered for by the MAF/ACT plus a lot of f**k mechanics used to plug them into vacuum and cause all sorts of running probs....I've fixed a lot of those f**k over the years.
That will not be Ford device under the warranty sticker...it is aftermarket.
Ford never put J3 adaptors on cars

Interesting about the MAF & MAP.

It's not like any J3 i've ever seen, and I've never seen the ECU's have warranty stickers on the bottom of them. Ones I've seen fit inside the ecu's metal case. I'm going to have to pull it out of the car to check the other side of it, see what catch code it has, and any other info on it.

Cheers

I had a warranty sticker over my J3 port on my ED ECU. Silver sticker saying "warranty voided if removed" or similar..

All the V8 EECIV's have the warranty sticker.

I thought all the v8's were EEC V's? I'm itching to get home tomorrow & pull the ecu to see what it's got written on the other side of it. It's really bugging me.

I wonder if a fuel filter change would be a good idea, even tho the filter under the car looks fairly new? Maybe swap the fuel pump for one of my spares & see if starting on petrol is any easier.

Ah well, i'll get to play with it some more sunday arvo.

Cheers

All EB-ED are EECIV
All EF-up are EECV.
A fuel filter change is always a good idea if it's unknown when it was changed last.

I thought that was true of the EEC's in the 6cyl, wasn't sure about V8's. Thanks man. I'll be changing the filter when i can get one tomorrow.

Cheers

No wuckers,
The only strange one is the EL 4.0L which used a 60pin EECIV connector but inside was an EECV. The reason for this was that the EF 4.0L had the first EECV which used direct ignition had problems causing it to fall over intermittantly...so they switched back to a distributor for EL and using the EECIV 4.0L pinout made it easy to do.

That i knew about the I6 ECU's. I've got a couple of I6 EEC IV ecu's in the shed for a rainy day. I'd love to get my ED 5speed ecu ripped so it can be uploaded to a J3, then you could make manual ecu's easier than they can be bought, lol.

The v8's on the other hand, the EFI windsor is a steep learning curve for me! I didn't get a chance to pull the ecu on the series 1 Xr8 today, had too many other things to do with stripping the ED 6cyl.

Cheers
