Went shopping at Carousel tonight and when leaving at around 8:45, when everyone else was as well, my car decided to die when I was about 3 cars back from the exit. I hit the hazard lights and it just wouldn't start. Stupid f**k mole behind me thought it would help the situation by sitting on her horn! As any p****d off, embarrassed person would, I got out and gave her a spraying and a half and jumped back into the car to try and start it. It took fuggen ages before it finally got going. Only for about 3 seconds then it died again. Had a few Holden drivers giving me s**t and people took the opportunity to use my plates to take the piss out of me. I was having so much fun as it just kept turning over and over and over, doing f**k all. It fired up again then died. Then finally, after another couple of minutes it fired up and kept going.

Does anyone have any idea what may have caused this?

Maybe TFI module, when they stuff up its usually when they get hot and then no spark till it cools down again or they die completely.Good luck.

could be an intermitant fuel pump too. By far the most common cutting out / non start failure on these vehicles.

Can you remember how it died exactly - as in straight shut off or a missing/dying *cough*, splutter type death? I'd be doubtful it'd be injectors or leads that would actually make it stop - but fuel pump is definitely worth checking out (personal experience) and maybe the TFI as suggested. Even prior to that it would probably pay to replace the fuel filter and check out how much gunk was in the old... let us know how you go...

While you do have my sympathy with the whole "no go" feeling - I don't know that I myself could have held my tongue after seeing the plates - LOL
It would've just been too fitting for the situation

You haven't tried exiting Carousel at 8.45 on a Thursday night for a while, have you Frank? There is a fair line up to get out of there usually, so there would be plenty of time for it to warm up and get hot. :(

Do you have a chip in the J3 port on your ECU? Tweecer maybe? I had much the same issue with my XR8 ever since I had it. Very intermittently running like s**t and cutting out, not starting etc etc. I had a Powerchip Gold 98 chip in the J3 port, I took that out and haven't had it happen since. Not sure but apparently sometimes you have to build up the solder on the contacts of the ECU for a firm fit as otherwise the chip can connect and reconnect if it is loose. I think that this was happening to my car I have just left the chip out for now. If it keeps happening maybe just pull your chip out for a few days and see how it goes. Can't hurt and it is free.

Sounds like it could be one of many things...

It pretty much just died. I'm thinking it could have been s**t in the bottom of the fuel tank getting into the lines. The fuel level was at the point just as the red light comes on and I was parked up top so went down the steep ramp. I don't know where the fuel pump is or where it draws from, but if it's near the front of the tank then as I was going down the ramp it may have pushed all the s**t down to there and got it all clogged up for a while. The fuel pump is getting changed and the ignition overhauled when I get all my stuff fitted, so hopefully that should rectify it and prevent it from happening again. I'll be making sure the tank is thoroughly cleaned out too!

I am running the tweecer so will ensure all contacts are good when it is retuned or get the switch chip.

I was getting out of there pretty quick as well and she was still pretty cold, so I don't think TFI module.

Cheers for the input everyone

It cut out again tonight just now, but started again straight away. I think this time was from the f**k altenator not charging at idle when waiting at drive thru. Have to get alternator reconditioned as well now. Will also get tfi checked out. What is it btw??? :P

TFI module is the "Thick Film Ignition" module. Looks like a little rectangle thing that bolts to the side of the dizzy with a plug connected to it. If your going for an ignition set-up like shnoods it will be getting replaced with a BPT dynamod one.
