Guys,
I've been off the tools for way too long. Just finished a >200km road trip on the Bruce Highway and the car ran perfectly. Pulled up on the driveway, turned the motor off and the cooling system resevoir starts purging all the coolant out onto the ground via the overflow tube. Turned the ignition on to be certain that the temp gauge hadn't risen above normal and she was sitting just under half way (N.B. normal for my car is about a thrid of the way up the dial), but a s**t load away from "h" for had it! The resevoir is now empty and i'm stumped.... Has my thermostat s**t itself closed, or is something else up with my beloved V8? Help greatly apprecited with this guys.... |

if youv cracked a head or blown headgasget it can push compressesed air from the cylinders into the cooling system? that would probably be the worst case senario

yeah got that, but i really don't think so...
1). I haven't cooked her 2). The car's had "every" service in the book and is in awesome condition 3). She's only driven 96,000km 4). Coolant is not contaminated by oil 5). Oil's not contaminated by water |

Id go with thermostat, had the same with my NF V8 and a new one fixed it. Well for a while til I cooked it

I'm just gonna haqve me a cuppa and then i'll pull the thermostat out to see whats doing...
I'll keep you all posted, but if you have other ideas feel free to hit me with them. |

Okay, well i've taken the old thermostat out and replaced it with a new one.
Road tested the car and she's behavin. Decided to test the old thermostat by boiling a pot of water on the stove and what do you know - she works just fine... So what's the go here. I guess a bigger road trip tomorrow running around for work, but i'm still keen for any suggestions as to what it might be; but lets not go too deep just yet with craked head's and blown head gaskets - i'd much rather start at the shallow end and slowly make my way deeper. You could be right there; maybe i went too deep right from the get go, and i should have started with the cheapest and easiest of them all...
The radiator cap. I'll be sure to buy a new one tomorrow and see how it goes from there. Thanks for that. |

It's amazing how the simplest of things can seem so complex.
Yeah it was just my radiator cap which shat itself; no longer holding pressure, and as a result dumping my coolant all over the ground at a whim. At least now i have a new thermostat as well to give me confidence over the seemingly factory 16 year old one i replaced. Thanks guys for your collective input - much appreciated. |

I had this problem with my NF 5.0 and it was the radiator cap!
